1947 Inter 30 type-approval / Betriebserlaubnis / Typenschein

Forums
Hello everybody, an Inter 30 is the youngest member of my british bike stable in Austria. The motorcycle has  a V5C but is not an original Inter but a zombie, however very close to a 1947 Inter (and fast and beautiful). I have the ambition to road register it in Austria and a copy of a ca. 1947 Inter 30 type-approval / Betriebserlaubnis / Typenschein would be o great help. Any help very appreciated! Andreas

Navigator identify

Forums
HI All I have just become the proud owner of a Norton Navigator.  A bit of a barn find.  Unfortunately it did not come with any logbook paperwork so I am going through the process of trying to get it transferred to myself.  I am not sure what year it is. The frame number is 100570 which would make it a 61 but an old receipt from a previous owner refers to 62.  Could it be a 62? I want to make sure that I buy the correct spares/parts catalogue.  Would the carb be the same.  If so how do I identify the AMAL model so that I can buy a gasket kit. Thanks in advance for any answers.

Removing the Ignition Panel

Forums
Hello!  With the sump plug out and a new sump reed valve in hand I'm excited for the next chapter.  Jim from JS Motorsports has been great.  But to do this right I need access to the top of my oil tank which is hampered by the ignition panel.  I thought it would be straightforward to remove, and I found a bolt with a spacer under the seat.  I can move the panel, but it's not coming out.  I had a word with my impatient side about using force to solve this and came back here. Does something need to be detached on the other side to pull this out?  On the right side of the ignition case there are

Oil Filter Connections

Forums
With a Commando ,you get used to vibration issues, issolastics or not. I find that you go round the bike on a regular basis tightening up Jubilee  clips. What i have never done is the clips securing the hose to the Filter pipes, these now seem to be weeping . On inspection the slots are facing the back of the gearbox, with about an inch of gap.

ES2 Cylinder Head Types

Forums
Up until this weekend I was aware of 3 styles of cylinder head fitted to ES2, 19R/S, 50 during the fifties. Circa 1950 it was still the iron head. Around 1955, possibly a little earlier, there was the Al-fin head. This was the same shape as the iron head but with an iron skull combustion chamber and aluminium fins. It used the same rocker box as the iron head. From 1957 there was a new version of the aluminium head with cast-in pushrod tunnels. At the Stafford show I noticed a head for sale which at first glance appeared to be the Al-fin style.

Dominator service notes

I have been reading through this wonderful publication. And been looking at brake pedals for various twins and singles. This is a minefield. The service notes do not cover this topic. I was wondering if we could start a picture index of known pedals. Maybe useful when searching the jumbles. The reason for this is that I bought a late wideline pedal and discovered the pivot hole too small but in all other dimensions, it is identical. I believe it is for a single down tube ES2, which uses a pivot with a nut to retain the pedal.

Replacing kickstarter seal

Forums
I've just noticed a steady drip of oil from the kickstarter spindle. Is it an easy matter of removing the 5 cover bolts, heating the outer case until the bush drops out, replacing o-ring with new x-ring, pushing the bush back in (is a new one required/advised), and bolting up with new gasket? If so, then I can probably handle that... But any tips appreciated

Prewar Chronometric speedos

Forums
I am (I hope) close to getting my Inter speedo but there's a delay sorting out the hub gear. But I found somewhere... Chronometrics are allegedly 1600 revs per mile unless they have a 4 digit number such as '1476' or '1500' or '1620' or something similar. Perhaps someone can confirm? Doing some calculations.

Cutaway Dommie timing cover

Forums
There was a thread a few months ago regarding tensioning Dommie timing chains, and I offered the use of a cutaway timing cover that I had. I said at the time it was in (deep!) storage, but it is now to hand. If the chap concerned is still looking to borrow it, please contact me via messaging.

Even More Crankshaft Woe?

Forums

Keen eyed readers will notice that I have posted here before on problems with my 1972 750 Commando crankshaft. The one which came with the bike was ruined beyond repair (QV). I then bought a second-hand crankshaft (in pieces) which I returned because a) the bolt holes didn't align and b) it was (0.018") bent.

Having given up on a decent SH crank I bought a brand new CNC machined steel crankshaft supplied unbalanced and sent it to my friendly engineer with conrods, pistons etc. for balancing,

Powering accessories without removing the tank!

Hi all.

So I want to add a Quad Lock wireless charger to my brand new Commando 961 SP.

To the best of my knowledge, you can't access the battery terminals without taking the tank off. I really don't want to do this!

Norton have placed a female charging connector under the seat. My question is, can I use this connector to power my Quad Lock?

My plan is use this adaptor:

650SS Exhaust pipes

Forums
Hi... I'm soon going to need a pair of exhaust pipes for my '62/3 650SS rebuild. Looking in the club spares shop there are a pair (Part no. 24020/1) for the reasonable price of £131 +VAT, but there seems to be no way that I can add them to my "basket". It doesn't state that they are unavailable but do I have to assume that's the case? John

Hot wires and possibly a duff battery?

Forums
I have just put my 2A Commando back together having replaced front and rear Isolastics amongst other things. On Friday I got it back together and it started first kick - but the AO red light didn't go out. This is supposed to go out at 12.4V  so a quick check with the multimeter and sure enough, battery sits at 12.24. (It's been on an Optimate charger throughout the rebuild of the bike) I put a bulb across the two alternator wires and the bulb glowed bright in response to an increase in engine speed - so the alternator is charging. Reconnected everything and got the bike going again.

Minimum starting voltage

Apologies to Stu.... my 2020 961 cut out on me when I stopped at the lights tonight; it often idles to a stall when cold (ish) - I'd been out no more than 10 mins. Pushed the start button and nothing; not a click, crank or whirr of a fuel pump. Pushed it off the road, swore at it, check battery - 12.2v. Low, but not dead. Waited 5 mins, then tried again, but this time glimpsed 'LOW 3.3' appear briefly on the digi readout before v climbed up to around 12.1v. Again, nothing; no pump, starter click - nothing. RAC chap came and jump-started direct to the starter motor.

TVS Norton New Models

I read with interest in Roadholder 436 page 3 that Norton are to "unveil new models soon". Does anyone know what the word "soon" means in this context? A while back I had heard new range was coming out in 2026 is that "soon"? Triumph seem to do a good job in announcing in advance of new bikes they are bringing to the market place.  This then means if you are interested in a new bike you might hold off looking at other Brands to see what one of your favourite brands has to offer. It would be good to have some idea of the "soon" near future bike range. regards Ian

ULEZ- test scheme loophole for older bikes

Forums
I've come across an article on the Telegraph website that goes into the details of getting an older bike tested and certified that it's NOx emissions conform to the requirements of ULEZ and so exempt it from the charge. Last August when that was written, there were 5 centres in London, charging around £175, so that's around 15 days worth of ULEZ Sadly the DT is behind a paywall, so the following link will only work if you have a subscription. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/cars/features/ulez-london-emissions-test-loophole-clean-air-motorcycle/

I have the mudguard and almost everything on. The problem is I cannot get the back wheel in. I can take off the back part of the mudguard but cannot bolt it back together when the wheel goes in. There is not enough space for the spanners.

Dominator chrome tank panels

I was wiping some old glue from the lovely chrome tank panels on my '57 Dominator, using paper towel and petrol.

I noticed that the areas I had wiped no longer had the beautiful high gloss finish.

I think that the paper towel contained fine sand which scratched the surface.  Does anyone have any idea how I can recover the original finish?

Lightweight Side Stand Trauma!

Forums

Arrrgh!  I've just lashed out £160+ on a 'proper' new 22611 side stand and 22610 stud from the NOCshop for my Navigator, only to find that on fitting it the mounting lug rotates slightly under the weight of the bike even when the stud is nipped up tight.  When the leg is extended fully forward it's at an angle that can't support the bike.

Pictures attached - have I mounted it incorrectly?  Is there a part missing? I sincerely hope so.

Light Switch

Forums

In the course of much head scratching whilst trying to establish the cause of the fuse blowing problem, I have focussed my attention on the light switch and cannot reconcile the wiring of the switch as fitted with the wiring diagram.

Does this look like the correct switch for a 1962 650SS?

The terminals number up to 7 - the wiring diagram shows terminals numbering up to 11.

I now have reason to believe that there has been some bodging going on.

Thinking definitely new light switch - would 34289A be correct?
