Press Release

This morning Andover Norton posted a Press Release hinting at an issue regarding infringement of rights. It looks like ANIL are about to square up against Norvil in a legal boxing ring. Whatever next???   surely April 1st isn't for another month.

Classic Speedometers personal recommendation

Forums

I’ve just received my reconditioned Commando Speedo and tacho back from Stuart Walker of Classic Speedometers. The Smiths instruments look to have been fitted later so Stuart refinished the faces with the green globes for my ‘72 Commando, as well as full recon of the mechanisms, glass and bezels, recalibration. I know that the trip meter is non standard for that year but I wanted to retain and Stuart aligned the globe very neatly. Superb work.

Dommie Frame Number

Forums

Hello All,

I've just joined the world of classic bikes having recently bought a Dommie 88, I'm a total newcomer so unsure if I've bought a basket case or not, the idea here is to reconnect to riding as I got bored with modern bikes, I do plan to restore the bike next year but ride as is this year.

Primary case sealing rubber

Can anyone tell me the dimensions of the rubber sealing strap which goes around the inner chaincase, and whether the rubber is relatively hard or soft?

I've had mine off for quite a while, and now that I try to fit the outer case, it won't go on, the rubber seal is too thick and too hard. Its measured dimensions are 25mm wide and 10mm thick. It is very hard, I can hardly compress it at all with my fingers, so it won't compress to accept the outer case. It also has no taper front to back.

P92

My buddy saw this pic on facebook, and thought I’d like it. Clearly a parts bin special from the dying days of NVT; according to the accompanying blurb, the frame was a modified one from the stillborn BSA Fury/ Triumph Bandit (it still bugs me why/how they got those 2 names the wrong way round!), with a more conventional BSA B50-type 500cc engine (and my how that’s been stretched from the 150cc Triumph Terrier!).

Freebird luggage carrier - Norton Commando

Forums

Hi, a Norton acquaintance of mine has bought a Freebird luggage monotrailer. He plans to hang the trailer behind a Norton Commando and asked me if I knew anyone who has experience with a mono trailer behind a Commando. But I don't know anyone who has done this, hence the question below.

Has anyone done this and would they like to share their experiences and tips?

Thanks in advance, Jan

K2FC points access 650 SS

Forums

After struggling to set the timing I realised it was too far advanced due to the points gap being too big. However adjusting points with the primary case blocking access and properly tightening up could be a lot easier with a bolt instead of a screw to fix the ponts . Is this something  others have done ? Is there a Lucas part ? any idea what thread , Its the late type points arrangement.

Wipac Headlight

Forums

At the Bristol Bike show today I met the seller who sold me the wipac headlight - I didn’t realise he had 2 more! Which means I have found another 2 if anyone is interested, the seller is in the midlands (or at the Bristol show tomorrow (Sun)) and they are £65 each. Message me if you are interested and I’ll let you have his details.

650ss, Slimline Frame, Rear Wheel Centreing, Spacers, Brake Drum / Sprocket, Brake Plate

Forums

Hi all

Am returning to a job I tried to "bottom" years ago, to try to sort the rear wheel on the 650SS, year 1966.

The spurious spacers, which sent the wheel to the right (looking from the back) are removed and, dealer supplied, spacers fitted. This has pushed the wheel to the left.

The new brake shoes were oversize and took a LOT of reducing (see forum topic 2017 from other annoyed owners!).

Basket weave seat

Forums

Hi all knowing ones out there, what year(s) and engine sizes was the Commando fitted with the so-called basket weave seat. I have a 73 850 Interstate currently fitted with a tatty "squares" seat and I want to replace it but I think they were fitted with the basket weave seats at this time. Am I right. Thanks Al

Navigator/ Jubilee styling panels

Forums

I recently acquired a pair of styling panels for my Navigator.  How are they fitted?  The parts list tells me there is a grommet, I'm guessing for the top fixing?  The bottom fitting looks like it is held be the swinging arm spindle, a second nut to trap the panel on top of the nut that holds the spindle in place.

A couple of photos of the fixings would be very helpful.

Thanks.

handlebar switchs

Forums

Hello

New to the club and the forum having just started putting together the pile of bits which is supposed to end up a '75 mk 111. The parts availability is very good but I am having trouble finding a LH switch/clutch lever fitting which I gather is no longer made. Be very grateful if anyone has any suggestions as to a source or alternative which would fit. It looks as though the Triumph ones are almost identical but they have the same problem.

Tim

Stanchions

Forums

About to make a start on renovating my 1960 Model 99 deluxe. The stanchions are covered in rust which may polish off, need to wait to see if there are any surprises on strip down.

The question is: would it be better to have the original stanchions ground and hard chromed or buy replacement stanchions, which I am reluctant to do as on other marques I have had more movement on replacement fork parts and swinging arms than the originals parts.

1972 Combat Interstate Camshaft

Forums

Hello I am currently stripping down the engine on my 1972 Combat Interstate, which I have owned from new, to investigate the cause of low oil pressure when hot. The bottom end has never been apart before, so when I split the crankcases yesterday, I was surprised to find that a standard cam was fitted rather than a 2S. All this time, I’ve never understood descriptions of the power characteristics of the 2S cam, and now I know why!

50's Silver tank paint 500T

Forums

Hello,

I'm about to paint my 500T fuel tank. I would like to know if anybody has a modern paint code for a close match.

I have a code...

Silver Birch 3404/M

I have taken this code to two auto paint mixers /suppliers neither recognise this code. They also told me that many manufacturers have the colour 'Silver Birch'

I would imagine that most if not all silver tanks in the 50's were painted in the same silver.

Was it a metallic or a flat colour, the latter I would imagine. Can anyone give me some guidance? Thanks...

Regards
Garry

Rear Chain Adjustmnt

Forums

Following work on the rear end I need to adjust my rear chain. I thought I could measure the length of each wheel adjuster but can I rely on this for accuracy?

If I measure and adjust the length of each wheel adjuster and push the wheel up against the adjusters I assumed that would give me the correct alignment and then would just need to move each wheel adjuster to achieve chain tension. But then when I do this and check the clearance between the wheel rim and the swing arm I find there is a large difference in the clearance.

ATLAS Alternator rotor/stator/charging problem

Forums

The rotor on my Atlas has decided to give up the ghost by the looks of it. Pity I can't post a video on here which shows exactly what's occurring so I'll have to explain in words and a few pics. In essence, the rotor has about 5mm play when rocking it back and forth on the shaft. It looks like the central metal part that slides onto the shaft/woodruff key is coming away from the larger magnet part. That play and slight wobbling on the shaft has obviously caused it to connect with the stator, so the stator is a goner too.

Crankshaft machine shop in France

Forums

I think that I’m going to need the crankshaft reground. It doesn’t look too bad, but it measures right at the bottom end of the range (marginally below perhaps), although this was only done with basic digital callipers. The shells look well worn. The strip down was only done to trace the reason for low oil pressure when hot, and the con rods could be rocked about a bit, so I think that getting professional advice on the state of the journals would be best.
