List of fasteners for Commando

Forums

I was wondering if anyone is aware of a list of fastener sizes for the different systems found on a Norton Commando? I have found a list that indicates the torque recommendations - and some part numbers - but I am looking for something that lists the size, thread pitch, and length (for bolts) that are used.

If there isn't anything like that available I will start working on one and share it with this group.

Thank you for any assistance!

Insurance beware

I am trying to get quotes for my renewal and got a good quote from PJ via the club scheme, however I have a modern bike as well and it was high when you include it in the mix. I thought I had nothing else to do but to get another policy for my modern bike but because I have a classic policy it appears that I have not accrued a no claims bonus.

Rear brake drum assembly

Parts book detail

According to the parts book the felt seal at 33 is supposed to be in triplicate (and the AN website offers to add them in threes to your basket).

However, at relevant point in the workshop manual refers to "seal", singular, and only one came out when I stripped my assembly. On the other hand I have no reason to suppose that the last person in there assembled it correctly.

valve lash caps

Forums

Whilst got the head off my mk3 850 doing the head gasket thought I would fit the lash caps purchased last year whilst the intake ones look like the rocker arm adjuster is pushing towards the middle of the cap the exhaust adjusters look a bit off centre , Would that be okay and are the lash caps worth while to fit

Reset Trip Odometer

Forums

I have recently purchased a very very nice 650SS - 151 BJW - which was featured in last month's issue of Classic Bike Guide (actually a re-run of an article previously run in Real Classic November 2017, but that's journalism for you).

Still getting to grips with it - literally when it comes to manhandling it onto the centre stand.

However, for the life of me, I cannot find how to reset the trip odometer - is this actually possible, or is it's presence just ornamental?

Dominator 88 rebuild advice

Forums

Back from my Aussie Holiday now and back to the spanners. I have my new pistons and the rebore is due to be done. Crank is being checked over and getting ready to weigh rods and pistons. My concern is when I removed the rocker shafts ALL 4 came out without having to use an extractor tool ! They dont seem `loose` in fact they are a nice `slide`fit in both the rocker arms and the cylinder head. Is this unusual as I only used an old con rod bolt (5/16") to screw in and pull them out.

Oil tank breather

Forums

Recently purchased a 1974 Mk2 and found the oil tank breather pipe just hanging between the swinging arm and gearbox.

Reading up it appears to have many homes from a breather bottle/connected to the carbs, I then noticed another option on the back of ham air filter but my pipe is capped off !?!

I'm totally lost now where to shove this pipe for best results and need the forums guidance ??

Cheers

1938 Model 18 Gearbox Bolts

Forums

Hi

The top gearbox bolt (Dolls Head) on my 1938 Model 18 has the nut of the top mounting bolt on the RHS of the bike (and, to be clear, the head of the bolt on the LHS). It is very awkward to get at to allow adjustment of the primary chain. Is there a secret here ? Or, alternatively, should the top bolt be mounted the other way round so that the nut of the bolt is on the LHS of the bike ?

Internet domain : roadholder.co.uk

Forums

Does anybody want it?

I registered roadholder.co.uk years ago. Never done anything with it. Current registration ends on 22 August 2024 and I will not be renewing it.

If anyone in the club has a use for it please get in touch, tell me why and you can have it free of charge (if it expires some chancer will grab it and price it at £1,000s).

Horn issues

Forums

I am a Commando owner since one week now and need to get it past the road test. Just discovered the horn is not working...

I am unsure which button should activate it: the indicator switch is on the right (European model) and the buttons above and below do nothing visual or audible. The headlight flasher is top left and the other switches on the left seem to do nothing.

Instrument housing removal?

Forums

My Speedo and tacho are away being reconditioned. In the meantime I’m going to remove the instrument housings, which are unpainted alloy on my ‘72 Commando, and give them a polish. Question is, can I simply remove the large hex head bolts from the top of the forks or is there a spring underneath which will need resisting? I suspect the former but you never know!

Clutch slip

Forums

My Atlas clutch slips a bit when its cold but after 5 minutes or so of riding it stops slipping. I recall it didn't do that until I managed to get the jetting and carb tuning spot on, at which point there was quite a bit more oomph from those high compression pistons. It's actually not a problem, its even quite a quirky characteristic of the bike. I just don't give it a wristful when I'm setting off and after a bit there's no problem.

Lightweight (heavyweight?) Clutch

Forums

Has anyone measured the force needed to pull the handlebar clutch lever to open the clutch?

If someone has what force was needed.

If not could someone measure it please?  A spring balance that can read up to approx. 20 kg (40lb) will be needed.  A loop of rope around the lever and the hook on the balance, pull the balance and see what the peak force is.  Not looking for high accuracy, just a reasonably close number, the average of a few pulls should do it.

Thanks in anticipation.

Chilly riding

Hello

Maybe it was the ‘Battered Mars bar with IrnBru syrup’ I had at a Burns Night Supper yesterday evening …but this morning I just had to get out on the Norton. No more excuses - tax return done, workshop cleaned up, domestic chores sorted (sort of) - and no rain forecast.

Dommi speedo drive gearbox

Forums

My 1957 "dynamo" Dommi 99 has a speedo drive box with no identifying numbers. It's knackered. The speedo face has on it the number 1550 near the centre, above the word  Chronometric, and near the bottom S 467/205/ N. The question is what is the correct drive gearbox for the speedo?
