600cc crankcase query

Forums

I have a '57 600cc single engine in a '48 ES2. I've currently got the engine apart to sort a crankshaft end float problem. There is something about the timing side crankcase and cover that I don't understand and would appreciate some help please.

When I removed the timing cover the top recessed hole in the magneto drive area of the cover didn't have a bolt in it

Crankshaft Alignment

Forums

I've assembled the crankshaft into the cases on my 850 engine - fresh grind, new mains, new shells, new new  AN conrods, N.O.S Hepolite pistons(std), new liners fitted.                                    I noticed that the T/S  piston wasn't level with the top of the Barrel. The barrel head face is parallel to its base.

Rear brake plate cam bush. 650

Forums

Something i have not seen before ,wear in the steel ? bush. Thought I was the only one using a rear brake !,  I have always used it as its the only way followers knew you were braking and I was always going silly fast and needed brakes and downchanges to save the day.  I think a newer brake plate is the easy option ,dont think any bushing availiable ?.

Hello,I am seriously thinking of signing up for the Beamish trophy trial this year, just wondering if anyone has a pre1980 enduro/trail bike at the back of their garage that would fit the bill and would consider selling, I don't want to spend a lot of money as it could be a one off or even a half off haha,4 stoke preference, twin shock, something easy to re-start for when I do fall off, don't want a rebuild, jap bike welcome just thought it worth an ask, will be going to the classic  dirt show in Feb to gen up so may pick one up there

slimline chain adjusters

Forums

The threads in my 650 swinging arm are stripped . I think they are 1/4 cycle .  I ordered new adjusters  and happily they have turned up  larger !.  Perhaps my luck is changing . When did they increase the thread size and what is it ?. AF  i am guessing .

69 Commando Clutch Roll Pins

Forums

Hi,

Early clutch so 1st plain plate is attached to clutch basket with 2 roll pins that have sheared.

Is there a standard size or do I just measure the diameter and order nearest mm size from e-bay?

Is there a smarter way of fixing- I think the assembly is hardened so may be an issue re-drilling.

Thx

850 Mk3 Front Wheel Rim

Forums

I am about to start building my Mk3 front wheel.  I have two wheel types here.  An assembled original, galvanised spoke wheel with a Dunlop MC275 rim, and the original wheel that was on the bike that had a crusty Dunlop MC288 rim, which was consequently rechromed (and looks much better for it).

there is a lot of chatter on AccessNorton about the two rim part numbers and what that means for differing spoke patterns.  However, the original MC275 wheel (definitely a Mk3 hub) and the photos of my MC288 wheel before dismantling both appear to have the same spoke configuration.

Manx Norton Laydown Gearbox for sale

Forums

Hello,

I have a Manx Norton G9-57 Laydown Gearbox for sale,

This has recently been serviced and had new parts where needed including a new 2nd gear & 3rd gear. Invoice available for buyer.

it has been fitted with a reverse cam plate so to knock down a gear you knock down on the lever, much preferred for racing.

I also have a Manx Norton Clutch that can be for sale with the gearbox.

I’m asking £800, can ship worldwide but based in West Midlands.

ARMOUR Exhausts - Re-Chrome Exhausts

Forums

Hi, Has anyone purchased Commando MK3 down pipes (exhausts) from Armour Motor Products Ltd in Bournemouth? If so, would you kindly let me know if the pipes fitted correctly and give their opinion of the quality of the pipes. Also, as an alternative to purchasing new down pipes; can anyone recommend a company that will re-chrome a pair of exhausts?

Thanks and Regards

Phil

Worth Saving? Rear Brake Sprocket 88/99/650ss

Forums

Hello.

I’m in the strip down and assessment phase and have so far discovered that my bike is an early 650ss engine in a 1966 88 Chassis with a 99 barrel. The bike was assembled by someone with zero mechanical aptitude.

Case in point. Rear wheel was not spinning so a strip down revealed the wheel had not been assembled properly and the rear sprocket studs are badly damaged. The teeth and the rest of the sprocket looks ok. For context - the bike has stood for 35 years. The chain is congealed and stiff. Front sprocket looks good.

1958 ES2 Rear Mudguard (Single downtube)

Forums

My ES2 lost it's original mudguard 50 years ago during a mild attack of customising. The old mudguard never made it to Sweden, where I live now. It was replaced by a stainless C-profile that has never done much to protect me or the rest of the bike in wet weather. Bashing up and down the A1 and M6 in the late sixties between London and Westmorland gave me an affinity for stainless parts that I've never lost. So I'm not looking for a reproduction copy of the original hinged steel item. My query is - would a slimline rear mudguard fit in the back of a single downtube frame?

Still here to take requests for those unobtainable, essential, Norton parts

Raised this thread to remind folks that the Parts Commissioning system is still live and always ready to accept the requests raised through the form at the head of this forum.

It's been a while. If you are new to this, read the first post and then the following threads will give you an idea how we gauge the necessity for NOC to commission that unobtainable essential part for the spares scheme.

Belt drives

Forums

Does anyone know the efficiency differences in respect of  bhp figures between belt drives and chain driven primary drives for Commandos?

Two factors come to mind.

Weight differential being one, the other, friction losses between the triplex chain and sprocket teeth being the other.

Another benefit would be less stresses incurred due to reduced mass.

Camshaft bushes muddle

Forums

Learning as I go, I have discovered that camshaft timing side bushes are flanged (part No 22925) and drive side bushes are non flanged (part No 20772A). I have been sent two non flanged bushes by the NOC spares team that are annotated on the accompanying paperwork as part no 22925, timing side only, which I now believe to be wrong. Not realising that the opposing bushes were different, I then asked for two more 22925 bushes from a well known Norton parts supplier (WKNPS), as the NOC team had sent me their last two bushes.

Electronic Ignition Mix and Match

Forums

Hi, My 69 750 Commando has Electronic Ignition fitted by a previous owner.

It's comprised of a Wassell Stator plate and Rotor but with a Boyer Bransden Mk3 Transistor box. I am still working through some engine issues so no chance to test it thoroughly. It did start and run.

Would you foresee any issues? Can I assume the switching signal to the transistor box is the same from the Wassell unit as from a matching BB Rotor and Stator?

I have a new boxed complete Wassell EI but didn't want to use it unless I needed to.

Thx

Settling an argument

Forums

Can anyone tell me if this was a factory colour scheme? I have recently re-introduced it to the road after an extensive rebuild. I bought it in a partially assembled state with an option of tanks, Roadster or Interstate. Living in a place like Western Australia I went for the long range option. Anyway, a few of my learned friends have professed that it " ain`t factory mate". I was under the impression it was available on the US market.

Correct Lucas Horn for 650SS

Forums

The horn on my 1963 650SS is a 6v Lucas 8H model. It was on the bike when I got it in 1971 and has an 04/62 date stamp on it so it could be an original part. I cannot get it to work. It was making a faint squeak so I dismantled it and cleaned the points. It is now making no noise at all. I have upgraded the bike to 12v but as it was making some noise before I dismantled it I don't think I have burnt out the coil. Getting it repaired may be an option but I am also looking at a replacement.

SOHC vertical bevel tube rubber seals

Forums

I’m wondering if anyone knows of a source for the rubber ‘top hat’ shaped sealing sleeves that seem to be the original type fitted at the top and bottom of the vertical bevel tube on a SOHC Carrol engine? The practice of fitting O rings (with special nuts?) appears to be the common approach these days but I was hoping to keep my first Inter top end rebuild as simple as possible.

Any suggestions as to source or even a simple alternative without buying new nuts would be very welcome.

Cheers, Bruce

Hermetite- whatever happened to it?

Forums

Out and about today, found myself driving down Tavistock Road in West Drayton (Long story- don't ask...) and as I'd approached it from the High Street, I had a sudden flashback memory (glad to recall anything these days, even if it's pure nonsense like this) that several decades ago I had driven down exactly that road to attend a job interview at the Hermetite company.

Hydraulic front brake

Over the years I have seen a few Nortons with a hydraulic  front brake conversion, utilising parts from some car or van, does anybody know what the donor vehicle was?, I know there are probably dozens that would do, but scrapyards don't let you wander around anymore so I could do with having more information, I would like to give it a try because, in theory at least, it ought to work really well, and if it did I might try making an alloy brake plate, does anybody know more?Hydraulic brake

Alternator rotor stuck fast

Forums

69 Commando. Stripping clutch cover side for engine removal. Looks like a replacement alternator rotor. Stuck fast. Tried a small 2 arm puller and two screwdrivers behind it but no luck. Very little gap between the rotor and the triple sprockets and chain.

Suggestions welcome

Many Thanks

Chopped monoblock on 650 SS PR bike

Forums

I have not owned a 650 SS  before and the carb layout and details were a bit of a surprise. The chopped mono has some features all  of its own, Special jet holder, a brass insert into the bottom of the body and  special short screws to hold the cover on.Access to everything is a nightmare . I'm Hoping you guys can fill me in on any wrinkles  i need to know !.  The engine has been tuned at some time with polished ports and valve gear , not seen inside but presume there could be other mods.  It will be some time before i can run it .
