Hi, I have an early 20M Commando where the centre stand is mounted on a frame tube rather than the later engine plate mount. I find it increasingly difficult in fact nigh impossible to pull the bike onto the stand which is in about the 4 o' clock position means the bike has to be lifted to get over the fulcrum. Has anyone found a solution to improve this. It has standard suspension fitted measuring 13'' centre to centre. I don't want to fit longer units as that would make the bike to tall for me to ride. Is there a way of shortening the stand tho with it being pyramid shape that may not be possible. I have fitted a brand new stand but it has not made any difference.

Hello
I had that problem, and put my back out whilst attempting it on a cold day. The main problem I had was having lean back and pull on the rear frame as there wasn't anything else to hold on to.
My solution was to change the the upper suspension bolt on the nearside for a pillion footrest, inverted and fixed with a special stud which I made, having a 26tpi thread for the footrest, and a unf thread for the nut on the other end. Whilst riding then footrest folds down but can be lifted horizontally to make a lifting handle when required I had the footrest powder coated black and have it sort of lying at the same angle as the suspension unit and it is more acceptable than having to stop using the bike.
Hope that helps, regards Andrew

Extend lever
Just a thought but instead of cutting and chopping the stand which could weaken it, have you looked at the possibility of welding an extension to the foot lever which may give you some extra foot leverage.

68 Center Stand
Hi Graham, thanx for your suggestion of extending the foot lever which I will have a look at. However, I still think the angle of the stand needs to be modified to save having to lift it over its fulcrum. Presently it sits at 4 o clock / 8 o clock and should ideally sit at 5 o clock / 7 o clock.
Meanwhile does anyone know how difficult would it be to fit the later stand which mounts on the engine plates?

dear Andy,
know your problem as I have one with18" rear wheel. Answer is a piece of wood in my case about 12" x 8" x 1" thick, place behind rear wheel, roll bike backwards till raised then deploy centre stand. Makes all the difference between impossible and possible
