brake discs

Forums

Hi all, I have a rim-mounted disc on a Foale centre hub front end ( it is a Norton Commando engined bike!)

The disc now needs replacing. It is 425 mm diameter including the 9 mounting tabs, and 292mm diamete hole in the middle. It is only 3.2 mm thick. The old one is an unknown stainless material.

I have tried many aftermarket disc makers, and have yet to find a definite solution. One company can cut the disc, but their oven is too small to do the heat treatment, so one solution is to find  separate heat treatment and possible subsequent final grinding companies.

Stolen bikes

Forums

Just gone out to the garage and both the XBR and the Tri-Greeves have gone. The Norton is still there fortunately but I wouldn't be surprised if they came back for it. Obviously people who knew what they were doing and must have known the bikes were there. We've had various builders / landscapers over the last few years and some of them have seen the bikes but it's pointless pointing fingers. Not Norton I know but... I've had plenty of bikes stolen in the past but this is a first from a locked garage (in Redditch). If anyone's offered bits please let me know. The bikes:

Dommie 88 Front Wheel Bearings

Forums

Hello folks,

I've decided to service the brake on my recent Dommie 88 purchase before I take the bike out for a run, I found I had a slightly rough wheel bearing so decided to replace both.

I've removed one bearing from the side with the removable cover easily enough, the spacer came out but left one end place still in the wheel so I need to remove that and the other bearing, there oddly are no felt seals present as noted by the parts diagram.

The NOC going down a slippery slope

We keep talking about encouraging younger members.

In my opinion we are becoming a club of old rich guys who have forgotten about having fun with our bikes and “shipping” our bikes to Barcelona. When I was a youth if anyone had asked me for the equivalent of a weeks wages for a rally fee for a weekend I would never have gone. Where is the “fun” and adventure in the club now? I never thought the club would have gone downhill so fast since we became a “Company”  Hooray to the Essex Branch for organising an affordable and I have no doubt a fantastic  “Not the Begonia” Rally

Good afternoon Troops,

Im searching for copies of Roadholder Magazine from 1977 & earlier to complete my collection.

If any members have copies "going begging" (for commensurate remuneration), I would be most interested.

Thanks in anticipation,

Dominator kick starting

Forums

My aging leg muscles are finding it more and more difficult to kick start my 650SS. Can some one tell me as to the best Norton with a Featherbed frame that is easy to maintain and work on and easy to kick start. I have looked into electric starts to no avail. I love my SS but wish I could start her without a struggle.I am not interested in high speed but appreciate good acceleration like the SS provides.

Early 650ss rotor and stator replacement

Forums

Hello. I’m trying to recommission an old 650ss which has stood idle for over 40 years. The engine number shows it to be from Sept 1962 but from the 1963 model year.

On stripping the primary chain case I was confronted with one of the old RM 15 70mm rotor and stator sets which are both ‘shot’ and the rotor magnets are very feeble. Time for a new set!

The new 74mm Lucas replacements look lovely and shiny in the box right up until the point where the new rotor doesn’t actually fit the crank.

Webb girder fork

Forums

Hi guys

I have a 1928 CS1 that I am rebuilding. I have come to look at the forks. Everything seems ok except the bottom yoke. Mine has the lugs on for headlamp mounting rods which I  believe is wrong. I have seen a yoke with these lugs cut off so assume they are the same dimensions.

So has anyone a picture of the correct yoke or better still a spare one!

I  will be running lights, so will need the small brackets that attach to the front of the blades for the headlamp rods. Again, has anyone a picture of these brackets?

Any information will be helpful

Norton Dominator Clutch Rubbers

Forums

Hi,

I have a Dominator 7 with a early model clutch. Its a project that I have and I am in the phase of rebuilding the clutch.

I bought a set of new rubbers because I though they would be all the same size for these clutches. I was wrong and the new ones where small compared to the old ones.

Old height is roughly 28mm. The new ones where 24mm. I could not locate anywhere these bigger ones.

Would anyone have suggestions where to buy the bigger ones?

Than you and best regards,

Antti

Peashooter 'silencers'

Forums

I've had my 72 Roadster back together for a couple of weeks and am getting the testing miles in when weather allows. My bike came with a set of Norvil pipes and peashooters. I know they are not quiet but I do find the volume a bit tiring when riding longer distances.

I would like to know if the peashooters that Andover Norton sell are any quieter please? They advertise that theirs have 'noise deadening'-does it work do you know?

Isolastic challenge

Forums

I bought my 2A Commando about 40 years ago and at some point I checked the Isolastic tolerances. That was at least 25 years ago so I thought I would check them again - whether they needed it or not. Not surprising they were as slack as a welly top - so I set out to rectify the situation, which is where my problems began.

Primary case oil type

Forums

Always used Morris 20/50 golden film in primary case and forks on my 1952 Es2 Norton. No issues.

Has anyone used Halfords classic oil 20/50 for primary case,as says on oil tin contains oil seal swell.Just thinking would this be a problem for cush rubbers in clutch, and outer chain case rubber seal band?.Only thinking of using Halfords oil for convenience.

Refitting the engine

Forums

I took my head and barrels off my 1970 Commando in situ before I found my knackered cam and had to do a full rebuild. My question now is, can I put the barrels on with the engine out and still easily fit the engine back in the frame or even put the head on too?  My NVT workshop manual doesnt cover this option.

Dommi 88 crankshaft

Forums

Need to know having read my Domnator service notes V1.2 manual ( Page 20) if the said `grub screw` talked about is the one shown (I think ) in the top photo ? If so the one on my crank doesn`t appear to have a screwdriver slot or an allen key head at all and it has been centre punched over. Is it essential that this comes out to properly clean the oilways ? Thanks, Wayne.

Law suit against norton parts suppliers (Andover Norton - Press Release 27/02/24)

What, if any, will the club's stance be regarding the law suit against parts suppliers?

As a Norton owner for more than fifty years I have concerns about the continued supply and likely cost implications of the action outlined in the press release that was emailed to me today.
