Hi all. I am wondering if anyone has more than a passing acquaintance with AMC gearboxes. My bike will not change down from top, or I think from 3rd to 2nd. The lever moves but no change happens. It changes up OK and moves up and down through 1st, neutral and 2nd OK. I have fitted a new ratchet, pawl, pawl spring and return spring to no avail. Any help or advice gratefully received.
The setting of the pawl spring

Was it working and then…
Was it working and then stopped? If so, there's probably a crack in the main lever return spring. The thin wire hairgrip spring should be symmetrical when you look down on it. One leg is bent up so the wire ends run in the same plane. When in place, it needs to be the right way up so its tips both match the tips of the pawl. The tips sit in grooves in the bracket at the end of the tips, and the pawl ends should be just not quite in contact with the wire legs.

I think the original return…
I think the original return spring was fine but I have fitted a new one from Andover Norton anyway. The bike has been missing the odd downward change for a little while but then recovering. Now it won't at all from top, even after fitting a new ratchet, pawl and both springs. I have fitted the pawl spring in what I think is the correct position with the cranked spring leg lowermost.

Old Britts tech articles
There is an excellent article from the Old Britts shop, thankfully kept alive by the NWNO in the USA.
See:https://www.nwno.org/resources/OldBrittsWebsite/gearbox_a.html
Scroll down until you find the part referencing the outer cover and work to that.
Worked perfectly for me anyway.
Regards,
George

The setting of the pawl spring and ratchet is critical-needs to be set right, can anyone describe properly-it has been mentioned on here before.
