ES2 Plunger Rear Wheel Fitment

Forums

I've been struggling to assemble the rear wheel correctly on a 1952 plunger.
I the photo's attached I have stuck the measurement between plungers at the axle forks (8 3/4 ").
The LHS side of the wheel seems OK, but the RHS cannot accommodate the spacer and the adjuster.
I'd really appreciate an experienced pair of eyes looking at and weighing in on what could be wrong there.
Thanks in advance

A Surrey branch member had similar issues that also had brake shoe bolts fouling the drum and finished up making shims and spacers . Will get him to look.

The plungers on both my bikes are both about 9" apart and the centrelines of the plunger shafts are about 10". You might have to jack the frame apart slightly (making sure to keep the shafts parallel).

.......improper assembly or incorrect parts long before the frame being bent.

Well I would too - but as I don't have anything to compare it to and this is my first ES2 I thought I would ask some experienced people.

That was why I measured the distance between the plungers - which measures 8 3/4 inches, which is about 9 inches but is infact about 1/4 inch too tight for the assembly I have.

The assembly I have was bought second hand but has spacers on the LHS which are straight out of Norton Owners Club shop. It (rear sprocket) aligns nicely with the gearbox sprocket and feels correct.

The chain adjusters are also NOC sourced as is the spacer on the RHS.
There is no speedo take off drive.

I can't think what remains problematic other than it doesn't fit.

I am that Surrey member that recently had to rebuilt the rear wheel spindle assembly. My experience is that you need to be prepared to fit and fettle until the right adjustment is achieved for your bike. I discovered my bike had some home made spacers. What I did discover was that all the parts are available from a number of different sources, but they didn't all fit exactly. The top drawing on the link below was correct for me.
Andover Norton Parts Drawings - Andover Norton Factory Parts - Commando Parts
I replaced nearly all of my spacers and both wheel bearings and it still didn't fit correctly. The speedo drive tangs didn't even engage. So needed to shorten the spacer so the speedo drive engaged but didn't rub internally against the spacer. Also and importantly, I was advised that on the ends of the spindle thick central section which have a radius at their root need to have mating spacers fitted that have the correct mating radius. I had to fit a washer on the sprocket side and I machined the radius onto the washer I.D. to suit. When you assembly the wheel there are a number of key things to check.

1) Tighten up the speedo drive side bearing lock ring using a suitable pin spanner.
2) Keep the cut outs in the plunger shocks parallel as they can rotate.
3) When the brake assembly is fitted, make sure it doesn't rub internally.
4) Make sure the chain doesn't rub on the inner face of the oil bath.
I had to machine 2 spacers to get the correct fit and I had to fit a 1mm shim to achieve the right fit. This required enlarging the ID on the shim which machined easily.
You are looking to be able to tighten the spindle nuts without pulling the shock together and causing distortion.

These are the parts I purchased:

Here are a few measurements from mine if it can help.
I have 9" spacing between plungers but have different space lengths from Michael's.
I also have two spare RH plunger slides and measured their widths
Sorry, I can't manage to download photos
Widths are :
Slides 1.125" and 1.124"
Spacers are 1.003" and 0,779"
