New old oil

Forums

I have just taken ownership of a 1943 WD Royal Enfield 350 OHV from someone I've know for years, just down the road from me.  As part of the deal I got 10 litres of 40W oil in sealed containers - it looks like it came from a local farm supplies shop a few years ago.  'That will do for your Norton too' said the vendor.  Do I need to be cautious of such oil ?

I bought twenty five litres of Castrol GP 50 for my G9 many tears ago and used it for oil changes over a period of around fifteen years, all I ever did was to give the drum a good shaking up before each change the engine is still as quiet as it ever was.

I happily used Agricastrol 40 in my 99 whenever I got the chance (visiting my father in law). Just the thing for your WD/CO.

Your bike is so understressed that it would probably operate with reasonable reliability on any lubricant with a viscosity over 20 sae .

Thanks - the question was more towards using it in the 99 - a relatively modern bike compared with the R/E - but now I have been reassured.
