Norton P11. Oil leak from former points cover

Forums

Hi,  I bought my P11 many years ago, been a great reliable bike, easy starter and done many 1000's of miles across Europe.  It came with electronic ignition and until a few 100 miles ago, no issue. It has however recently started leaking oil into the points housing? the wire held points cover is a tight fit and so oil builds up a little and then just drips out.  there is an oil way on the shaft, but no oil seal that I am aware of?  there was a small drain hole, which I assumed the problem was coming from and so sealed that, but has made no difference. Anyone had a similar problem, know the likely cause? All thoughts appreciated.

There will be an oil seal that can be replaced , i would allow it to leak out  till you fix it.

Thanks Rob, before I strip it out, do you know if the oil seal is accessed from inside the timing cover or located in the points cover behind the electronic ignition plate?  The leak has become too annoying to leave, I don't like leaving these small black pools of oil on the drive.

Hello Jonathan - I had one of those twin coil ignition housing devices on my Mercury and I can't remember that there was a separate oil seal to stem the oil from the timing cover going into the contacts.  As far as I remember the bearing had a seal (or two seals) built into it.  Perhaps the item had a replacement bearing fitted without seals ?  You will need to remove the housing to check/replace but don't forget the sprocket is held secure with a parallel peened pin unlike the Dommie which had a taper pin.  Good luck, Howard

Cheers Howard. I think you're right, it is likely to be a sealed bearing that has failed. Am just going to strip it out and hope I can get the bearing out without too much trouble.
Thanks for your thoughts. I'll post when I have it stripped down and send a photo for others to see how it's set up if they have a similar problem.
