MC275 rear rim

Forums

Having recently acquired a good hub to replace my damaged one, I eyed up the job on the existing wheel and noticed the spokes look stressed. Can anyone please confirm if they think the rim pocket holes are at the wrong angle, or possibly the spokes and nipples could be the wrong diameter?

Looks like the nipples are too tight a fit in the rim holes, (so the nipple can't align with the spoke) or whoever built the wheel got the lacing pattern wrong.
The worst example i've seen, of this kind of thing was on the front wheel of a 350 Manx, the  spokes had a nasty bends in them to line up with the nipples. It was lucky the owner kept the bike as a museum piece and didn't ride it.

Hi Adam
I have not got the answers for you, but I have a clue on what to ask when you talk to a wheel building expert. 40 hole rims come in 'Norton' pattern and in 'other bike' patterns. It might be that this is a 'other bike' rim and a wheel builder has forced the fit onto the hub.

Looks to me as if someone has bent the spokes in an effort to take out some built in slack seeing that some spokes are bent in one direction and some in the opposite direction.

Hi Adam, how are you getting on with your rear wheel? Best wishes, Terry.

Hello Terry, I took your advice and spoke to Devon Wheel company and they identified the rim and spokes I need. Just received them yesterday so I can get started on the wheel build soon. I've been reading up on wheel offset and the guidance looks to be to have the rim centered between the swinging arm tubes.
I'm looking forward to having a steady speedometer, which is how this all began after finding it's erratic needle movement was caused by the cracked wheel hub.

Hi Adam, glad to hear you're getting the wheel sorted. If you want offset figures RGM have a list on their website under "technical tips, help & instructions" located at the top of the website page. I also have an original wheel I could measure for you. Best wishes, Terry.
