ES2 Crank issues
Stripping a 1946 ES2, I find that the big end bearing is completely shot (as is the little end, bore etc). Luckily (thought I) I have a crankshaft still wrapped in greaseproof paper from when Norton rebuilt it back in the 60s/70s.

Does anyone know how to tell the crankcase halves are matching, where are the numbers etc.
I have been looking for methods of changing the seals on Commando inlet valves without the removal of the cylinder head. Doing a search on this site refers to the 'rope trick' and also directs to Access Norton site.
Greetings,
Zoom photos, see enclosed .pdf), markings appear to be two âdiamondsâ (red) and an âlâ and a â - â (blue). Any ideas what these markings indicate?
Hi all I am a new member to the Norton Club
I am not new to Norton ownership owning a 1977 850 commando for the last 15 years.
I have recently purchased an ES2 500 1947 and have a couple of questions.
I recently put an add in wanted for a CJ frame ,about a couple of weeks later got an email from a man it America saying he had such a frame and a few bits if I was interested.
Am I alone in being denied access to some of the recently added Roadholders. February, March and April 2011 tell me I do not have enough privileges to access them. I thought we were a democratic club in which all members had equal rights!!!
Can anyone tell me if there is a way I can find out what colour my mk11a 850 commando was, when it left the factory?
This is its colour at the moment.
I have 1 1959 Model 50 and, amongst other things, the tank needs a respray. Is is possible to remove the panels from each side of the tank, or do they just have to be masked off ?
I have a Model 50 and I am about to attempt my first ever engine rebuild on a motorcycle. Some questions:
Is there a book available on the subject ? There will have been many rebuilds taken place - has anyone documented it ?
Does anyone have any information on this enterprise, which evidently thought of itself as a Norton specialist or agent?
Can someone please advise which way the rocker spindle flats should face on a widedeline 88 and if the wrong way round would that cause major excessive smoke?
Regards. Roger
I'm looking for some inspiration/guidance!
I have two problems with my engine 55 ES2, one is oil getting into the combustion chamber and the other is a noise a bit reminiscent of a high mileage Ford pinto engine!
Rather than pay the £90 to Norton for the workshop manual anybody got one to sell, don't have the facilities to download and printout, want the original manual.
Spotted in tonight's London Evening Standard:
Not sure of this is technical enough for 'General' but we all wear boots. These might be of interest. A good quality £250 motorcycle boot with Norton logo for those who like such things (and why not?)remaindered at £75.
Greetings All
Apologies if this subject has been discussed previously (as I'm a recent new member)
Hi,
Can anyone advise me?
I have just acquired an 850 Commando Interstate. It was manufactured in 1974 and I believe it should be a MK2A by the year of first registration.
Can anyone shed any light on the headlamp (sorry!) on my 1972 Fastback (see pic attached)?
Does anyone know the font used in the word "Norton" on the official motif? Cheers - George
I'm fitting new 12v ignition coils to my Electra. The new coils have terminals + & - instead of SW & CB. As it's positive earth am I right in thinking that the + terminal will connect to the contact breakers? Any advice welcome.
Hi, I'm looking for a clutch lever for mk3 commando with the magic 7/8th. between pivot and nipple centers, any help welcome.
ATB John.
Hello,
took my barrel away to be checked for rebore, I hoped a +10 would have done as there is a pair in the shop, however it looks like a +20 is needed. Does anyone know where I can get these, or have a pair for sale.
Andrew
Hello
I'm sure this question has been raised numerous times, what is the ideal crankshaft balance factor for my 1972 750 Combat motor? I have seen reference to 85%, but I'm not sure that's correct.
Can anyone help? I have a few extra numbers on the crankcase and I don't know what they mean. Photo attachedAttachments

Can anyone identify this handle and tell me where it fits please.
Since I bought my 63 m50 the rear wheel has has 1/4" play at the rim.
Suspecting faulty bearings i stripped the hub to find they were fine. It appeared however that the spacer and shims were past their best.
