Mystery headlamp, probably French

Forums

Can anyone shed any light on the headlamp (sorry!) on my 1972 Fastback (see pic attached)?

More particularly, I'm puzzled by the two toggle switches. Both are two-position toggles; one switches between parking and headlight in the usual way, while the other is not connected to anything -- nor do there seem to be any unaccounted for wires inside the shell.

There's also a Jaeger ammeter, marked Charge/DÃ?charge (i.e. in French), while the headlamp unit is a Marchal with yellow French headlamp bulb.

So, what is or was the redundant switch intended for?

The bike has had an eventful if somewhat obscure life (factory despatch records are silent) but it was re-imported in the 1990s and subsequently spent a documented period in Switzerland.

Apart from the headlamp, there is further evidence of a period in France in the form of a Marseille dealer's sticker on the rear mudguard (I'll post separately about this when I have a picture to upload).

Hello Julian, I cannot comment on the headlamp shell - I like he Jaeger ammeter BTW. Ref the 'spare' toggle switch I imagine it was possibly for auxiliary lighting (daytime riding/fog lights etc.) which may have been removed when the chap who fitted them sold the bike. The switch would probably have been left fitted to avoid leaving a gaping hole in the headlamp shell. These switches don't look like OE fitting in any case.

Thanks to Mark for these thoughts; as you say, the switches certainly don't look like OE, though they seem very professionally fitted -- and unreversible relics of some past auxiliary lighting seems highly plausible as an explanation.

Glad you like the ammeter - I too think it's rather smart!

On the bike's foreign travels, I'm just about to post a query on the general list.
