new member and es2 spares

Forums

Hi all I am a new member to the Norton Club

I am not new to Norton ownership owning a 1977 850 commando for the last 15 years.

I have recently purchased an ES2 500 1947 and have a couple of questions.

First itis very difficult to start I would appear to need legs like Sir Bradley Wiggins. I have managed to get her started a few times.

Is there a knack to starting??

I was told by the previous owner that it had a rebuilt mag but that was in1989 ish. The bike has not been usedor started since 1991.

Also there is no side stand or center stand. Is this an item that is available?

sorry not worked out how to post pictures yet but will try soon.

Yes starting a single is different from a twin but once you get to know it then if you apply it ito a twin it makes that easier too.

You can get the instruction manual for the ES2 here

http://www.pdfmotomanual.com/index.php?r=site/page&view=manuales&order=t&key=N&make=1964&lang=ENG

Page 5 gives the starting procedure, using the decompressor lever is mandatory to get it over TDC before you deliver the starting kick, on a twin you just apply pressure to the kick lever until the pressure leaks out and the piston just goes over TDC.

Hi Edwyn, look at the spares section on this site for the stands, just make sure you've got the right parts book for your bike to hand.

Regarding starting, there is certainly a technique to learn, but if there is something out of adjustment -carb, timing, magneto- it will be difficult to start and it shouldn't be.

Eddy. i will give you a laugh , i bought back a 19s-600.engine reco-ed -it .. changed the SPARKPLUG -SUPPRESSOR-CAP to a NON- SUPPRESSOR -CAP [ better-for the magneto].. fresh fuel, put a rag under the carb- bowl and tickle her up till she floods out the top, then pull in the decomp-lever and KEEP holding it in, kick her a few times through the stroke, it gets the fuel in a bit.. , tickle her carb up again till it flows out ,bring the piston up to tdc..decom-her and move her just over the stroke as i did.. release the decom-lever ,don't give her any throttle. and give her your full weight through the stroke , well i did that and what happened then was she nearly broke my ankle.. i did it again but this time i thought i will use the other foot ,i couldn't understand what i had done wrong.. well i was looking at the handle- bars and realised what a Dick-dead i am i hadn't fitted the ADVANCE retard lever..because IT was still on the other handle-bars i was going to fit.. well I fitted it,pulled it on, tickled the carb up, did the same setup again-but used the left-leg as i was still in Big -pain,she didn't start ,didn't kick-back ,give a little pop, i new she was ready, set all up again made sure the ADVANCE-RETARD WAS ON and kicked her with the Sore-foot [ full body-weight ] and she was running and idling nicely and advanced her slowly as she warmed up... as she hadn't been running for a log time i always was told to put my finger on the oil return-pipe inside the oil-tank- near the tank-lid ,[ if you look in the tank you will see it returning-oil-intermittingly] .. for a while it will feed the rockers + valve-guides , might smoke a little.. when she is nicely warmed you can set the idle+mixture .. if the idle is too high she might not want to start ,make sure your spark-plug and mag -points are set right.. i like the 19s.single- engine it is my poor mans manx.. i was told by the bloke that reco-ed my mag that a Supressor-cap put an extra-load on the mag.. so i pissed the cap off. tommy

Thanks for the replys they were really helpful.

Quick update have ridden bike down the road and all good handles nice goes well and sort of stops.but i could only get her started by bump starting.

I have stripped down the mag and noticed it was a clockwise mag the engine runs an anticlockwise mag. This was ok as it had a spark but the advance retard was incorrect. My local mag rebuilder has the mag and is going to convert it for me.

I think 1947 was a clockwise mag but my engine is a 1948

Also can anyone tell me the correct rear light and if i should have a brake light?

Also the correct part number for the center stand when looking on the web there are conflicting reports of where the stand should be located.
