First ever engine rebuild !

Forums

I have a Model 50 and I am about to attempt my first ever engine rebuild on a motorcycle. Some questions:

Is there a book available on the subject ? There will have been many rebuilds taken place - has anyone documented it ?

On the actual task of removing the engine, are there any pitfalls I need to be aware of, or hints on making it easier ? I assume it is best to remove the head and barrel before attempting to lif the crankcase out ?

When rebuilding the engine are there any modifications/ deviations from standard that I could benefit from ?

Where is it best to get the replacement parts from ?

Any help welcome.

Many thanks, Mike

Hi Mike,

You don't say what year your bike is, but I am assuming it is late '50s early '60s. If you put strip down procedure in the search box at the top of this page you will find some info that might be useful. The club has a DVD for rebuilding the pushrod engines but you will find spares are quite expensive, especially if you go to a dealer or on-line sites, and auto-jumbles aren't far behind. You can probably find instruction manuals/handbooks from the same sources. As for modifications it depends on what you are expecting from the bike as there are lots you can change but it can be a lot of effort and cash to do so. Regards, Richard.

They say you're never too late to learn and after 50 years of motorcycle engine and bike rebuilding I've just realised that I'm wasting my time here trying to help other members only to get kicked in the teeth by newbees...Obviously I've deleted my original reply....Thanks for enlightening me....Les

Hi Richard,

Thanks for response. My bike is a 1959 model. I don't particularly want it to go faster. My question in regard to modifications is based on the fact that materials and manufacturing techniques have improved over the years. I just wondered if any 'improved' relacements have been identified over the years ?

Regards,

Mike
