Zen, and the art of wasting an hour or two
Shoving a pencil or similar into a plug hole to roughly find TDC is pretty straightforward.

With this year marking the 50th Anniversary of the launch of the original Norton Commando, activities are taking place around the world to celebrate the occasion.
Hello All,
I nearly put my oil pump om today. When I took it to pieces (bike not pump) it had no oil pump gasket--I presume that this is standard as the oil passed through a rubber sandwiched between pump and timing cover.
sorry - dud post - failed my first attempt at attaching more than one picture - it seems to be possible only by editing after posting...?
I managed to get my crankcase breather off. It took some heat to convince it to budge. Probably the first time it has been touched in 66 years.
There was debris in there so it needed some attention.
Hi, I have bought a 1929 model 18, apparently with a re-built engine with a high comp piston. It's really difficult to start, but when it does start sounds fantastic.
I took the bars off my 1937 16H today and took the opportunity to take some pictures to illustrate the bracket which provides positive steering when rubber bushes are fitted (following recent questions about this topic).
After reading the article about the Thorspark electronic ignition system in last months edition of Roadholder. I was wondering if anyone has fitted one in the KSF magneto of a Norton?
At least 4 of the pins that hold on the cover to the right hand side of the rear hub have sheared off flush.
Followed the manual, and seeking a double check on timing chain and sprockets. Does the photo look ok; where I have added the white marks ? Many thanks, Ade.
Just checking there should be 2 thrust washers each side of the timing case. On the inside there is also a chamfered ring fat side to thrust washer.
Just out of interest how long can you stand on the kick start against compression? I've just got back from a 10 mile bimble and found I could stand on it (ES2) for about 3 seconds before it went over TDC. I'm 11st (70kgs).
Hi all, wonder whether anyone could help me with identifying the oil tank that came with a project just purchased. Also confusing is that there is no obvious oil return pipe when looking down the filler neck.
What Ho chaps! hope all are well. I wonder if anyone can assist, I have a 961 Sport and despite what I try cannot get used to the handlebar height - probably because I am 6'3".
The Shropshire Branch will now meet at the Bradford Arms in Knockin about 3 miles west of the northern end of the Nessucliffe bypass on the B 4396 If you reach the Knockin Shop you've gone too far.
Fed up with excessive wet sumping and after reading recommendations on the Forum that they are so good, I decided to splash out and buy a new âAndover Nortonâ oil pump.
Hi folks I'm new here ,and new to the world of nortons
I have a 71 fastback that has been of the road for the last 15 years or so ,I am just starting the rebuild .
Does anyone know where I can buy a pair of these? my little Navi is going to look naked without them.
I have the above. I bought it as a runner with MOT and now decided to restore it. This has been like opening a can or worms.Fair play to the old chap who has kept it running since 67.
Been 10 years putting a 57 Model 50 together, thanks to all those who have helped to date.
The latest headache is with the primary inner chain case. I am using a 59 Alternator engine and F/bed primary cases.
Hi guys Am I missing something? I took the top end off to attempt to cure the oil mist all over the top end. Put it back together after fettling and the application of Wellseal plus a new plug (NGK equivalent to the Champion previously fitted).
i recently replaced the clutch cable on my '56 ES2 but has stretched so far I've run out of adjustment. Can anyone recommend a supplier of traditional heavy duty replacements?
thanks
stuart
Does anyone have experience with the Model 99 fuel tanks sold by Royal Enfield out of India?
I need the rear brake lever arm, D11M-469. I found a site that has one, but says there is a short and also a long arm. I didn't know there was a short & long arm. Also, says they fit both Model 7 & 88.
In the current issue of Roadholder there is the suggestion that wet sumping can be prevented by compressing the rubber oil pipe with a long-nose mole grip (with the jaws filed flat).
Has the situation changed since the thread on the subject a couple of years go? I see Goodridge Banjo Bolts make a range so wondered what is the thread size/pitch on the original C62 part. Thanks for any help. George
Ok as you know I bought a navigator engine from gumtree a couple of weeks ago partly because I have a whole bunch of Navi bits that I could make into a complete bike.
