Thorspark Electronic Ignition

Forums

After reading the article about the Thorspark electronic ignition system in last months edition of Roadholder. I was wondering if anyone has fitted one in the KSF magneto of a Norton? My 1960 Dommi 99 has what I understand is the original K2F magneto which I want to keep on the bike (just for niceness) and most if not all EI systems require the installation of a new housing to replace the mag. I've read various reviews/comments on numerous websites/chat rooms etc, and although most are favourable it seems there is a common thread regarding the final set up taking hours.The installation is quite quick and simple, not much more than an hour or so to remove the points plate and cam ring then install thecontrol box and sensor;the final timing set up can take anything up to a couple of hours and involve a lot of messing about with a strobe to tweakthe timing.

Any comments for or against would be welcome

I fitted Thorspark, in 2012. The claimed fitting time (2 hours) is a bit optimistic, but, it has not been touched since. Starting is nearly always first kick, and, with the old plug leads taped up under the tank, it is hard to spot the ignition is not original.

Hi John:

Thanks for your reply. Your vote of confidence is just what I'm looking for before committingto the spend(yet to convince the wife). I'll have to decide where to fit the required ignition switch but thats another story

Best regards

Thanks for the courtesy of your reply John. Re the the switch position; on my Dominator, the "kill button" was on the left, below the dual seat, I just removed the button and fitted a simple switch.

Hi John;

Many thanks again, I'll sort out an ignition, or on/off switch preferably waterproof and put it somewhere out of the way of prying eyes and nosy fingers. I might need some advice with the electrics re the on/off wiring though as I'm a retired mech eng but can usually find my way the 'electric string' stuff.

Best regards etc
