Serial number?
Just found a number hard stamped on the back of the crankcase: 99 4280. The 99 seems self explanatory but can anyone tell me what the 4280 represents.

The bike in question is a 1959 Model 50. I have convereted it to 12V by buying, from Paul Goff, a 2 wire 200W alternator part no. ALT200L, which I believe to be an RM27. This replaces the 6V alternator (RM15 or RM19).
Hi, I know this appears on the 'News' bar on the left but just so it is not missed:-
Hi All,
This is the first time that I have used this service and typing this from a chilly winter in Australia.
Please bear with me for what must appear as a deluge of stupid questions, but I joined the club knowing that it was the best source of information.
i cant seem to get my clutch to work properly I clean it all out and wash the plates put it all back together and it works perfect after about 50 or more miles it starts to drag and I have tried all grades of oil but the same problem any suggestio
Just put a brand new set of Amal Prem's on my Mk 3 ES 850 Roadster. Main jet supplied with them is a 200.
cheers Philip for that but the problem starts when I put oil in .If I ride it without oil there is no problem .if anybody knows why please let me know thanks
Am I the only one who uses this app? I thought it was going to be great but it seems to have just petered out. Using it on an Android pad it no longer updates, photos can't be uploaded (or deleted), events have dissapeared .
Just wanted to say thanks to Joe and the team for hosting another great day!
Originally posted in Nortons - General. Having another go here. Hoping to find some support so I can force Lucas to pick up that their H.O. alternarors don't fit Commandos without quite severe modification.
Can any of you officianados tell me what I am looking at.
Please can anyone tell me whether or not the colour of the 1958 Norton Dominator 99 is a standard colour ? It is described by the seller as "Polychromatic blue". This may just be his interpretation.
the timing chain on my ES2 is so slack it can touch the sides of case - is it possible to adjust it? Canât find anything in the Norton manual.
Being the proud possessor of a shiny new rear rack, I thought I'd fit it this afternoon. Easy-peasy - four bolts. How difficult can that be? Yeah right!
My original Norton Maintenance Manual & Instruction Book (Publication 105/P) for my 1964 Navigator quotes the 'oil tank capacity as 3 1/2 pints with the oil level 2" below the edge of the filler orifice'.
I have just bought back the 1956 Dommie 99 that I previously owned in my teenage years (1959) While sorting through the box of bits I came across the headlamp, beautifully powder coated but holding a concave lens.
I have been looking on line for the specs on a Commando primary chain. The ones I see are Renold. I think they are 3/8" pitch triple row with flat side plates, so that it can run on a slipper tensioner. Exactly how wide, and how many links?
My Commando has been laid up for a few years and the battery is a bit old, but still has a reasonable amount of charge.
I have both a ATD mag. and a manual mag. On the contact breaker plate the upright stem that pivots the heel is hollow on the back side. The manual mag. has a spring loaded brush in it. The ATD mag. has nothing in there.
I'm doing magneto stuff to my 1957 88. i ACTUALLY HAVE A LEAK FREE CHAINCASE AT THE MOMENT! Not wishing to disturb it I stuck a Helix protractor on the crank end (picture herewith) with Blue tack.
My 1952 ES2 came without a prop stand. I looked at the NOC and Norvil offerings but (a) they are the thick end of £150 and I'm a cheapskate (b) there seemed to be some issues with them.
I spent a fun time last winter rebuilding the swing arm of my Commando (2A) with all the joys of seized spindle and reamed bushes.
I am posting this question on behalf of a member:-
Most Brit bikes had + ve earth dynamo systems. Which is better?
Does it take much to switch polarity? Is it more than reversing the battery and re-flashing the dynamo?
Paul
I've checked the field coil resistance on my Lucas E3L dynamo by measuring the resistance of the instrument then deducting that from the reading taken across the "F" terminal and earth. The answer is zero. I understand it should be around 3 Ohms.
Hi,
Has anyone got a Dunstall silencer mounting bracket they would sell, provide dimensions of or send me a template so I can make a pair. Attached picture shows what I'm looking for.
Terry.
Hello. thinking of fitting some indicators to my bike. will fit the fronts onto the headlamp bolts on the shell. but just wondered what would be the best position on the rear.
I have just been reading the Maintenance manual for my ES2.
