Many thanks Anna......

My 1952 ES2 came without a prop stand. I looked at the NOC and Norvil offerings but (a) they are the thick end of £150 and I'm a cheapskate (b) there seemed to be some issues with them.

I was browsing through this forum and came across a post from Anna-Jeannette Dixon saying that a Kawasaki ZZR 600 stand could be used. It was a matter of moments (well a few days) to source one from ebay - £7 - and then to consider how to fit it.

In my boxes of bits I found an old alloy engine plate (source unknown) which I mounted outboard of the existing engine plate by using spacers and longer studs turned up on the trusty Chinese lathe. I also fitted a bolt to the forward portion of the engine plate (the only non-reversible mod) to avoid any chance of twisting.

Some days and sweat (hot isn't it?) later it's finished and I'm very pleased with it. Total cost of less than £15.

It could be more elegant and I may devise a Mark 2 version with the other odd engine plate but will probably just leave it as it is.

that looks great Ian. i did a similar thing to my 56 19s. Anna mentioned Kawasaki stands so i rooted around and came across this side stand in the photo. the one i fitted was off a gt 750 Kawasaki. i just cut and shaped a piece of 5mm rolled steel plate drilled and bent to suit. drilled the bracket and fitted the stand, welded on an anchor point for the spring on the bracket then ground the ball from the end of the stand it kept contacting the primary cover and mig welded a peg to the stand to able me to push it down with my foot. replaced the two engine bolts for high tensile ones. and fitted a return spring its original use was for a trampoline.

I always had a problem getting my boot under the side stand on mine. I finally fitted a Jubilee Clip round the stand and adjusted its position along the stand and its orientation such that the adjusting screw impinged on the engine retaining bolt below the crankcase. It just holds it out enough to get a boot under without faffing about and looking very uncool!

Hello Ian. that photo is the MK1 the MK1a has the peg bent adjusted down to create more gap between stand and primary cover . as for using the stand i just sit on the bike use the peg to lower it and back heal to get it back up .

It's funny, when I was a lad with my Model 18 I had no trouble jumping off and getting the bike on the rear stand. Never felt the need for a prop stand.

Bikes seem to have got heavier and more unstable in the intervening 50 years or so......
