Rear suspension units

Forums

Being the proud possessor of a shiny new rear rack, I thought I'd fit it this afternoon. Easy-peasy - four bolts. How difficult can that be? Yeah right!

I've managed to undo one rear top suspension bolt (very limited access to nut next to tyre) but cannot for the life of me get it to come out. It turns with a spanner but does not want to drift out. Should I be compressing the units or put the bike on the centre stand and let the wheel hang?

Anyone been there before?

Thanks for any guidance.

i put mine on the Centre stand then get a piece of wood that fits under the rear tyre just push it in from the side and carefully lever the wheel up just enough to take up the weight of the swing arm then the bolts should come out. try leaving something under the tyre to hold the wheel up in position because if it drops down it will be difficult to get the shockers back .

don't know if you are also struggling with captive nuts turning in the mud guard not releasing the bolts.

Thanks guys. I couldn't work out whether the rear wheel needed to be lifted or allowed to drop. Managed to get the bolt out but having a devil of a job getting my finger inside the near side of the mudguard to hold the nut captive whilst I turn the bolt when reassembling. I may have to remove the rear wheel. Nothing is easy!

George,

Years ago I had the same problem when trying to get the stud out. I seem to remember that the tapered alloy spacer between the frame and the side of the mudguard had corroded onto the stud. Once you've got them out make sure you use some grease to prevent the corrosion.

There isn't much room to get your hand inside the mudguard, but with a QD wheel it doesn't take long to take the wheel out, especially as you now have good studs in your brake drum!

Bit the bullet in the end and dropped the wheel. Also put the bike on my small lifting jack. Now all sorted. Still got to faff about re-aligning wheels. Thanks for all your inputs.
