Petrol Tank Welding/Restoration

Forums

Hello, I'm struggling getting someone to work on my 57' Dominator petrol tank. Its not in the best of condition but I want to use it as its the original. I have approached local welding specialists but as this is a fiddly job, they don't seam interested. A body shop had a look but his idea of just filling/spraying then coating the insides isn't what I want as it just wont last.

Is there anyone in the NOC that can help?

Any information would be appreciated.

Primary case oil level dommie 99 1962

Forums

Having searched here and on t’internet trying to get ( I hope) a defintive answer on this. The original green Norton handbook warns you of the perils of no lubrication, only advice given is ‘ensure adequate lubrication’! I would have thought adding oil until it comes out of level plug hole would have been correct but then i read about adding 200cc of oil which is much more i believe. Hoping not to spark off a huge debate on this

thanks

Big end size

Forums

I need to know the FACTORY SPEC, for the con rod big end eye dia. for a 1.500" Norton crank journal. Domi 99, Factory spec for the big end journal = 1.500 - 1.505" what is it for the rod? If anyone has the correct info it would be mush appreciated,

Cheers, Barrie.

brake pedal

Forums

Hi, Just purchased my first Norton. Its a 1958 polychromatic grey 99 which I have been doing a refurb on. My question is that the brake pedal has excessive side play which leaves it resting under the dome nut of the side case cover. Wondering if I need to replace the pedal or the spindle depending on which is most likely to wear.

Replace distributor with magneto 99 dommie

Forums

One of the questions on the forum sparked (no pun intended) a possibility of replacing the distributor on my 99 1959 with a magneto. The bike is standard with the exception of 12 volts and the charging and starting system working well.. My only experience of magneto showed it to be exceptionally reliable and was attached to an automatic advance and retard unit. The bike started easily and saved me worrying about batteries pushing it home etc. Is the current arrangement on the 99 equivalently configured with the AR unit but attached to the distributor.

Rev-counter gearbox

Forums

I have a two-into-one issue with a couple of tachometer gearboxes, both of which are faulty in different ways but with which I hope to perform the two-into-one trick in order to obtain a functioning item.  As the attached photo shows, one unit is missing an end cap and one of its pinions, whilst the other one is complete but the thread for the drive cable spigot has been stripped, so I would like to swap over the two cases.

500/600 small end bush

Forums

Dear Heavyweighters,

I have a lightweight which uses a conrod very similar, but shorter and unbushed at the small end.

To recover damaged small ends I propose enlarging the conrod hole to take bush D12/159 or T2160 as used on Dominator with 11/16 ins gudgeon pin. Same as Lightweight.

Can anyone tell me the bore of the hole in the small end of a 500/600 dominator before the bush is driven in. I want to achieve the same interference fit as Dominator so that the bush stays in place.

Steering damper parts

Forums

Hi. I’m trying to build up a steering damper like the one in the photo below but I’m struggling to understand a couple of things. I was wondering if anyone has an original one?

Problem 1: I can’t work out if the barrel-shaped spacer goes above or below the big nut with a hole in that attaches the upper yoke to the fork stem.
