Hi
Ive been looking for a new pair of swept back pipes for my 650ss and struggling to find a pair as most traders are out of stock.
Some swept back exhaust pipes listed for for the Atlas don't also say that they fit the 650ss.
I asked Classic bike shop if their Atlas pipes would fit a 650ss and they said they were unsure.
Anyone with better knowledge out there have a definitive answer through experience ?
Thanks
Mark

Hi that's interesting info…
Hi
that's interesting info. Just measured the width of mine and they are 1 1/2 inch across the whole pipe. The ones advertised for the Atlas also states 1 1/2 inch diameter. I might take a gamble and just order them.
thanks
Mark

Cant see any reason the Atlas pipes would not fit the 650 . Check pipe diameter as some Atlas had big bore ? . I have some big bore frame hugging Atlas Proddy Racer pipes on my 650 (only a very few made for 1968 factory bikes ) which fit far better than normal 650 pipes !.

Size Matters
I purchased two sets of swept backs for my 650 Dominator and both have 1 1/2" bores.
Which of course made the silencers flap around as they were 1 5/8" intakes. I sorted that issue by purchasing sets of expanding sleeves which fitted perfectly.
Much to my surprise both sets of pipes fitted really well whereas some Armours pipes did not.
The only drawbacks, apart from the strange bore size, being the Chrome dulled very quickly and every single pipe cracked at the header end within 5000 miles. Some internal welding cured that problem.

Are yours 1 1/2 bore?

Pipe World
My experience was a classic case of getting what you paid for. My expensive Armours pipes were thick tubing and well Chromed but the bends were not quite correct and the end of both exhausts pointed at the rear wheel. By coincidence I had purchased a set of swept back Norton pipes from them in 1990. These too had been poorly shaped but I solved the issue by getting out my blow torch and bending them to fit.
My cheapo pipes were not perfect in terms of bends and angles but close enough to give good runs that kept clear of the rear brake pedal and kickstart levers. But they were clearly made of thinner tubing with flash Chroming. I purchased two sets of pipes so that I could use one set for everyday riding and the other for shows. This paid off when the spot welds failed and a quick switch kept my bike roadworthy.
Why they all had 1 1/2" dia tubing I know not.

Interestingly the Atlas PR…
Interestingly the Atlas PR pipes supplied by the factory for the 68 TT bikes are 1 3/8 OD , so it seems they worked out the the fat pipes were not the best for power on the 750.

Hi Mark - In my experience an Atlas swept back is usually 1 5/8 inch diameter pipe along its whole length. Whereas 650ss and 88SS swept backs usually start and finish as 1 5/8 inch but in between are reduced to 1 3/8 inch diameter. Often the 650SS swept-back pipe has a link to the opposite pipe just beyond the head flange. Have you tried Fedex - they make to suit. Also Armours in Bournemouth. Good luck, Howard
