I have  been using Yamalube 10/40 fully synthetic in my 99  for  3 years,  now on my 3rd  winter  oil change , Oil was free so my parsimonous  attitude put me up for it !.  I had been using a variety of oils before all with a low detergent  spec and no  proper oil filter. The oil comes out brown/black after 1500 miles .No swarf at all on the several magnets in the system.Engine  last openned in the previous century runs smoke free and quiet with more compression than I can cope with. Had a close call last year with faulty carb badly overheating the motor to pre-ignition stage. No apparent damage. I will change to a 20/50 synth  when I  run out  of stock.

   Just as a general comment, I have used Castrol oils for nearly 50 years and run my old-ish everyday cars and vans on GTX 20w-50 since it's introduction. Over recent years in the UK, the viscosity has gone down to 10w-40 with the addition of synthetics, which is a bit thin for my 29 year old car. While visiting my sister-in-law in Portugal I found GTX 20w-50 with synthetics currently available in 5 litre new style containers (not 4 as in UK) at the equivalent of £29. So why doesn't Castrol make this available in the U.K. ?

My engine is now much quieter than it was , I put it down to better  control of rocker spindles(RGM kit) and oil flow to the head (custom return restrictor) ,  With the extra  piston clearance (I specified) and  short skirt 650 pistons  ,I was resigned to a bit of clatter ,  but that has faded too.  Its always possible that I'm going a bit deaf. !   I will keep my eye open for a reasonable cost  fully synth 20/50  preferably in a 5litre can  ,enough for 2 oil changes .

The original 1970s GTX was actually formulatd to 15W50 but never said this on the side of the cans. This was one reason that the late John Hudson favoured it as an all-year round lubricant. It could be used in the forks, gearbox, primary and engine.

By the turn of the Century GTX 15W/50 had evolved into 15W/40 and later 20W/40 versions with bucket loads of additives. So no good for bedding-in new engines or adding to the primary cases.

Looking on the modern auction sites and people are asking fortunes for empty, original GTX cans. I wonder what an empty Duckhams tin of 20W/50 is worth now?

Thats good Phil,  Now if you would just add  the whitworth spanner sizes all round , both sides in A3  size    Job done !!.  I will buy  a couple for the workshop .    I would think you could sell  a few more too.

Westway do a fully synth 20/50  V twin oil  a full 5 litrs for   £28   delivered  ,  Wonder if its any good?.

Thats good  stuff,  the 20 litre rate  is a bargain ,    As long as wet sumping not too bad  with the 10 at cold temps.    They also do a fully synth 15-50  bike oil.   perfect .
