Side stand and extended magneto nut issues.

Forums

Acting on advice given in a previous thread, I've purchase a side stand kit and an extended magneto nut from RGM Norton Ltd. First off, I have to say that the quality is excellent, but neither would fit without some modifications being carried out.

For the magneto nut to fit, I had to remove a small amount of the crankcase joint flange to give enough clearance for the nut to line up with the stud and turn freely. My die-grinder made that an easy fix.

To get the side stand to fit in the recommended place, I had to mill a significant amount of material away from the fixing clamp. I won't know if I've got it right until the bike has both wheels in situ and I can give it a "test lean", but it looks to be in approximately the right position. Only thing I have to do now if figure out how to get the spring back on!!

There have been numerous after-market versions of these side-stands for Dominators.  Most have required some fettling to fit correctly, while others have needed more serious bodging.

Check that your primary cases don't foul on the side stand nuts and that the leg folds away cleanly.

I had one made of dodgy metal (The clamp broke.)

An engineer made me a copy using much better metal. There was no centre stand !

my limited understanding is that it should be fitted using the engine plate/ something very fixed as a ‘stop’ to prevent any unwanted rotation of whole clamp. (This comment is for those unfamiliar with item )

They are very short.  The result is that only a small change in ground level or length of stand causes a big change in the lean angle.

Take care if parking in the rain.  The left slope makes it easier for water to penetrate the front brake drum.

But it's very handy.  The bike gets heavier every year now.

Yes indeed. That was the problem. The clamp was too big to fit between the frame tube and the left hand engine plate. That's why I had to remove some of the material.
