mystery hub

Forums

i am trying to identify this hub as I NEED A BRAKE PLATE. it has been suggested that it is a Garden gate Manx. it is steel, 8 inch, 40 spokes. Various pictures that i have been sent or found seem to show exact copy but is steel the right material etc.  if it is a MANX how much would it be worth with the wheel, 19 inch ally flanged rim or on its own, without the brake plate. Thanks N

Hi  Neil,

Yes, this is an early Manx hub made in malleable cast-iron fitted from 1937 to '39 and '46 to'49. The original rim was probably a 21" steel rim, and when a new rim is fitted, a check is needed to see if the cone shape has distorted during spoke tightening as this can make the brake ineffective and will need the hub to be skimmed true. Finding a separate brake assembly will be difficult and/or very expensive. As an alternative, a standard 8" 1954 to '56 type brake could be modified to fit.
