Gearbox sprocket removal

Forums

I need to remove the gearbox sprocket from my 1959 model 50. Three quesions;

Is it LH or RH thread ?

What Whitworth size is it ? It measures approx. 1.5" A/F

Is a box spanner 'man enough' to move it or do I need a ring spanner ? A socket is unusable on it.

I know yours will be the AMC box: on the Laydown box the sprocket nut is 7/8"W (spanner may also be marked 1"BS) with LH thread. A box spanner works for me (I don't have that size socket in the toolkit). Unless the locking tab is missing it is unlikely that the nut has been tightened excessively. The locking tab is a bi-hexagon ring secured to the sprocket with a small screw. To line up the screw with the hole in the sprocket the nut has to have some freedom to move ie it cannot be fully tight on the shaft.

I'm 99% sure the sprocket nut is a normal right hand thread. In general, spinning parts on the left of the bike are right hand threads and spinning bits on the right hand side have a good chance of being left hand threads.
