Exhaust note - 1947 Model 18

Forums

Having no precise knowledge of the internal layout of the silencer on my 1947 Model 18, I wonder if anyone can advise me as to my next dilemma?

Recently, I was able to trace a rather annoying rattle to the perforated disc inside the silencer detaching itself and after much effort was able to remove it and in effect creating a straight through exhaust. Gone was both the mellow tone previously enjoyed (although the new tone did have a certain appeal â? to me at least â? but not my wife). To resolve these TWO problems I inserted a tubular baffle (from Hitchcocks) in the end of the silencer. This resulted in a significant reduction in decibels but the original tone was not recovered.

Yesterday I spoke to Armours and they were surprised that the perforated disc had detached itself and that it made such a difference to the sound.

My dilemma is, am I just imagining that there is a different tone as âsoundsâ are really difficult to make comparisons of from memory (if you know what I mean) ?

Your thoughts â?â?..

Thanks

Ian
