Hello,
I'm just sorting fitting the yolks to the frame. I have the 2 cups , 2 cones. all ball bearings , shaft and top and bottom nuts. When I fitted the whole lot to the steering head I seem to have a 1/4 inch gap so that the bottom bearings fall out. I know I am missing the top dust cover ( anyone got one? )...but I assume that they are quite thin.
Anyone have any explanations or drawings/photos of why I may have this excess play?
cheers
rob

Hello Rob,
Sorry I can't immediately put hands on a picture but you are quite obviously missing two items as well as the dust cover which is part number 21707; part number 21703 is a spacer and part number 21702 is a 20 thou shim. All three of these items fit above the steering head cone (upper).
Patrick.
Thanks Patrick,
I was hoping there was something missing!
I'll have to get in touch with the club spares and see if they are available.
many thanks

Would anyone know the height of part number 21703...ie the spacer above the steering head cone. I have bought a length of spacer to cut down of the right diameter and it would help if someone could measure the height.
many thanks.

Hello Robert,
It's very difficult to take an accurate reading with the forks assembled and I don't have any sophisticated measuring equipment but a best estimate says about 9/16"(or a bit over 1/2" in technical terminology).
At least it gives you a clue but maybe someone else has forks on their bench and can measure properly.
