hi there.
So since I finished my 38 model 18 I fancied a full restoration this time So was very lucky to stumble across this one and being literally just down the road from me! You never know what's lurking in garden shed.
I believe it to be a model 18 Colonial version Due to the tin Work being different to mine.
I understand this was last on the road in 1978 and has been languishing in a shed ever since And I have a few questions.
I'm not sure if the engine is the original one identical but not the original and I have all the engine numbers and frame numbers as below.
engine number A3 5255 Q. What does the Q mean? And what can be learnt by this engine number?
Frame number 86855. What do we know about this? It does have a sidecar bracket on the top of the frame, but this looks unused.
Could someone tell me what type of gearbox this is as clearly not a Dolls head?
Hopefully the pictures will help, but any information would be so gratefully received.

38 Norton model 18 restoration
So continuing on after many months, it is slowly coming together. As you would remember, the frame was not and had some bad repairs,in great shape, but I do have the documents for the frame so that had to be restored. The frame ended up at Jake Robbins Engineering and he did a fantastic job.

Magneto rotation
Hi Richard, hope you are keeping well.
I'm pretty sure it should be clockwise rotation and that's how I had it restored and assembled.
I'm hoping it's just the wrong cover on it, Would that make sense?
cheers

Magneto rotation.
Hi Matthew,
Yes, after a second look I can see the H-T socket has been moved to the other side of the body. Don't forget this will be tight wire advance now the rotation has changed.

Magneto rotation
Hi Richard
thanks so much, are we basically saying that it will operate but the advance retard control will be the other way around?

Tight wire advance.
Hi Matthew,
Yes, that's correct and is an anomaly of Norton OHV and SV models of this period. The only problem being that the lever can gradually work back to retard while you are riding with-out you realising it is happening. Best to keep the lever as tight as possible while still being able to use it for starting.

Thanks so much, Richard.
I think I will be looking for the right unit as my rebuild will bug me if it's not factory correct.
Will start looking:)))

Hi Richard
yes, okay I get it, Thanks for clarifying my other Norton M18 Is a tight wire advance and yes does slip back to retard position whilst riding.
It's part of the characteristic of these Amazing machines.
Back to making the foot rest tubes now:))
Thank you again, Richard for your valuable knowledge!

Engine complete
So as you know, I was undertaking the engine rebuild, However, even with all the new replacement parts at some cost, it's not a simple case of just fitting them correctly as some of the parts just didn't fit.
So I took the engine to Mike Pemberton And with his machining Capabilities and knowledge, he completed the engine for me. With a few internal enhancements.
It was a 60 thou rebore And the correct bearings throughout and crankpin..
Also located the short inlet manifold For the 276AU Carb As the original was missing.
if you're reading this Mike, thank you very much for your time and again, Richard Cornish for your amazing assistance so far :))))

M18 Handlebar brace
Sadly, the original handlebars were just too far gone to recover being heavily corroded and the original handlebar Brace had been broken and welded many times, However, the handlebar ends, I want to try and recover and put those on the new bars.
A big thank you for Paul at racing Norton For the manufacturer of the new bars and brace to match, See pictures attached

Hi Richard, good morning to you!
The only difference I can see is this below which I would assume to compensate for the frame design (enclosed)
The first picture is of the engine case that was fitted to the bike, 1946 (example)
The second one is the spare engine case 1947 that I will have to use Richard
