What gearbox?

Forums

I'm new here and am going to recreate a 1952 Manx Norton based on the long stroke 500cc DOCH engine. I will not be racing it so competition wise is not important. Would a four speed gearbox have been the norm back then and what type would it have been and what ratios. As I say I'm new here and don't possess the knowledge that many of you have so please excuse my ignorance. This is a retirement thing just for my own enjoyment helped by my brother.

An old racer told me that the need for 5-speed came when fairings became common in the late fifties / early sixties. Geared for the higher top speed obtained, first gear became so high that you had to slip the clutch in the hairpins. So I think that a 4-speed gearbox is what you shall have. My own 5-speed gearbox was installed in the bike probably in 1962 and I think they where very rare at that time. Good luck with your project.

A 1952 long stroke Manx had a 4 speed laydown gearbox. There are 3 different cases on these gearboxes depending on what Norton it came off, marked 101, 102 and GB8. The one stamped GB8 before the number is for the featherbed frame Dommies etc that should fit your Manx. I'm not sure about the other cases, I think they are different mounting spacings but I can't remember now without going to the garage and measuring gearboxes. There was a post some time ago about the differences.

Just a quick update managed to get a 4 speed Norton racing laydown box. One more piece of the jigsaw. Special thanks for all the kind help I have received here so far.
