Upright Gearbox Assembly???

Forums

Just like everything else in my project, my gearbox comes from several machines and is the pick of the best parts. Most everything seems there but for a few cork "seals" and a shim or two. My question regards the mainshaft bearing packing washer, A2/323. The text of the manual says to place it between the bearing and 1st gear but the parts book shows it behind the bearing in the intermediate cover(see attached photo). Other drawings show it as described in the repair manual. Seems like it's more effective on the outside(dryside) of the bearing and probably, in the end, makes little difference that I can think of as the effect on the endplay of the mainshaft will be the same. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi.

In the 'Doll's Head' box that shim, which is dished, goes between the bearing and the 1st gear with the concave side against the bearing. On my Manx there are also shims (A11M/863) between the clutch worm screw nut and the main-shaft bearing which are there to adjust end float.

Cheers.

Interesting that the earlier versions show the shim inboard and later outboard of the bearing. The other difference I see in the diagrams is the absence of a felt seal under the worm nut in the earlier drawing. Seems to me that if the felt is there, it needs to ride up against something other than the bearing, hence the outboard shim. I'm gonna get that shim and follow the drawing, not the text.
