Sticky shift lever

Forums

John Morrissey here. I am the original owner of a Dec. 1972 750 Combat Interstate Commando. I had the outer case of the transmission off to replace the three Kick Start lever, shift lever and internal shift lever 'O' Rings. I have performed this relatively simple task several times over the last 44 years with no problems.

This time, however, even though the case went on easily and the shift worked properly through all 4 gears (and Neutral) the shift lever seems to stick a bit in the 'UP' position when down shifting.

The only maintenance done was to replace the 'O' rings, and oil.

There is no interference between the shift lever and outer case.

The 'return spring' was reinstalled with the "two bend" prong on the bottom. There was the proper .010" clearance between the spring and the engagement level.

Any ideas?

The gear indicator sometimes needs a washer to stop it binding, and the lever sometimes needs care positioning it on the spline to give clearance.
