Side stand

Forums

Hello all, after back surgery I'm beginning to struggle with a few aspects of Commando ownership (and other large(ish) bikes). I've fitted an Alton starter to alleviate heaving away on the 'kicker'. I've found that on my other bikes the ability to reach and raise and lower the sidestand whilst seated on the machine is a great feature. Unfortunately the inordinately long sidestand on my 850 Mk.2A (together with the location of the pivot-point) makes this operation impossible. Any suggestions? Possibly an after-market side stand etc?

Thanks.

Cannot help on the alternatives but if I recall you are taller than me (5' 8). With short legs I can't lever out the stand either and have to ease it from under the pipe and then flick it against the spring.......it usually works! Have you tried that technique or does the back prevent it?

Iâve long held the opinion that the Commando side stand is one of the best on any motorcycle Iâve encountered, but most wear on the faces that limit the travel of the stand, both on the stand & on the lug, meaning the stand disappears too far under the exhaust pipe & silencer to be easily found & also goes too far forward to reach when sitting on the bike. Iâm just shy of six foot & can sit on a Commando with both feet flat on the floor & find that on many of them, even I canât reach the stand to retrieve it. If you build up the worn surfaces with weld & grind them back to shape so the stand stops where Norton intended it to, & then slightly lengthen the prong (or add one if you have an earlier stand without it) you should be able to customise it to your build & seating position etc so that you can easily find it with your heel to deploy it, & also reach it with your toe to pull it back. Iâve carried out this procedure to several customers bikes, as well as my own, & all have said how much better & easier the stand is to use afterwards.

Hope this may help you,

Regards, Tim

Periodic tightening of the pivot bolt and nut helps. I also wrap a couple of thick cable ties around the bottom frame rail where the rubber stopper on the stand hits it. You may find there is a slight dent in the frame where the stand has been hitting the frame, this will compound the problem.

Finally, try and keep the contact areas free from oil, ATF and grease, this helps keeping the stand fromslipping under, as does not letting the stand come back at speed via the spring.

Hi. I have the same problem with the sidestand and put a jubilee clip on the frame where the stop tries to go under the frame. The return of the sidestand tended to knock to clip round, so I was going to ask for some other suggestions. I had wondered if getting a small piece of metal plate welded to the frame to stop the sidestand from passing under the exhaust and frame and hiding would be a good idea.
