Hi, I rebuilt the gearbox on my 1959 model 50 following the guidance from an article in a classic magazine by Mick Hemmings. It all worked fine on the bench and I could move up and down all four gears and neutral no problem. Now it is in the bike with the primary drive connected and clutch fitted and I am really struggling to get neutral and first gear. Anyone else had this problem and if so will it go away if I get the bike running or do I need to strip the box down again?
Thanks

Hi Jak, with the engine running, you will findfirst gear and neutralwill select more easily, provided the clutch pressure plate lifts squarely.

Most gearbox/gear changing problems derive from the clutch, I would look there first before stripping down the 'box. Possible causes include a dragging clutch, primary chain too tight, clutch plates uneven or not freeing off etc. Your first gear and neutral difficulty is also consistent with the clutch, but are these problems noticed only without the engine running?
