part finding for newbie

Forums

Hi,

I'm new to the NOC - I am old and grey though Smile

Having previously worked on other project builds, BSA RGS and newer supermotos etc, I have obtained a 16H engine for rebuilding as a project. First couple of things I did were to join here Smile, buy a parts list and manual and visit a local autojumble.

Things are going quite well, not great, but at least okay and the good thing is I'm learning. I picked the 16H so I could learn a bit about side valves. So far I've had some cracking parts from the OC - which came with a brilliant service and price.

One thing I am stuck for though is a cylinder base stud. I'm finding the parts list a bit of a challenge and a plough through looking for item numbers to reference a part number. I've been okay so far till I went looking for the part number of the base stud (16H 1943 exposed valve). I can measure the threads and I do have a good one for length - but I really fancied just buying one.

I have learned through reading on here that a few people have favoured parts suppliers - but I have to say some seem to have little or no web facility and I'm not a phone around kinda guy - might have to be in this case I guess.

Can anyone suggest a part number or point out where I'm going wrong - is there a choice of parts lists? or online parts lists? (I bought one as I couldn't find one on line).

Thanks for a great forum and impressive introduction to the OC - the joining process was super slick and quick, spares were super quick, perfect and very reasonably priced.

I will keep exploring as I'm sure there are other resources I've missed (and that I'm sure will be helpful).

best regards Raymond.

I am possibly the worst person to give advice on Norton Singles. However, My 1937 and onwards parts book gives the following part numbers for a Model 16H.

Crankcase - 3677

Barrel - 3713

Cylinder Head - 9111

Stud for Barrel to Crankcase - 9002

Nut for above - 9003

The bad news being that even when these old part numbers are converted to later versions, none are available through the usual suppliers.

The Model 16H continued in production up until 1955 so there ought to be parts lists about. Possibly worth contacting is:

For cylinder base studs you could try someone like ba-bolts.(Google...). I don't have one to measure but guess they are Whitworth one end (into case) and BSF the other. 5/16 maybe? But they don't need to be Norton specials.

The pre-1938 (&WD) base studs are 3/8" and oddly enough are threaded whitworth into the cases and on the other end (there is a short plain section) It seems illogical to use such a coarse thread for a steel nut fitting. Why didn't they use cycle thread for the nut as per the cylinder head ?

I'm pretty sure that Russell Motors had them fairly recently...but that means picking up the phone although they respond quite quickly to faxes too.

Give this website a try www.bmhstore.bmh.com.au for parts - yours and other models. Have found the supplier excellent. I can highly recommend him.

Thanks guys.

Iâll give these suggestions a try. Getting to know the various suppliers is part of the fun. Each tend to be slightly different in the way they work and the style of parts, weâll get there though. Interestingly I did order a few parts online last Friday - only to find at the end of the process, I couldnât pay for them till they sent me an order invoice. I chased it yesterday to say I still hadnât received an invoice to be told, weâll sort that out on Thursday or Friday! Crickey thatâs a week before the order even gets picked up - still got to be picked, packed and snail mailed.

i think Iâll irder a new parts list while Iâm at itð

Took out a stud from a WD 16H crankcase lying around.

Thread both ends 3/8W

Length 45 mm ( 1 3/4" )

Threaded length crankcase end 18 mm

Threaded length top (nut) end 22 mm

Sorry for giving metric measures.

Easy enough to make, esp. out of stainless. 3/8" rod available from suppliers at most shows/jumbles (and on ebay!), and a 3/8W die.
