Norton Slimline Featherbed Handlebars

Official records say My Slimline Dominator was despatched from factory with straight handlebars and ball end levers.

My 60 and 61  Dommies came  with the standard  low rise bars   that had  drilled and tapped holes for the dip switch .  I think the straight bars were optional , I dislike straights because they can give the cables a hard life  on the fork nuts if you try for an organomic angle that gives a good clutch action. You can improve matters by fitting some bar risers  as on our Atlas.

You can usually tell orriginal bars because they will have the drilled and tapped holes for the horn/dip switch. When pattern /aftermarket bars are fitted owners often changed the switch to the clamp on ones. However I think  i used my orriginal bars on another make of bike (!! ) and drilled and tapped some new  bars for my 99. I think the rise is about 2" and you are probably better off looking at old road test photos  to  judge the shape you need if orriginality is your aim.Avoid alloy or stainless steel as they are likely to snap off in a minor spill  wheras  good old plated steel bars just bend a little and get you home.

All the UK SS and Atlas Models had the straight type of handlebars unless there was a request for others.  The US market had some different types but they don't complement fast riding.  Good luck, Howard

Here are the original bars from my Atlas. I would call them flat but they are clearly not straight.  Drilled, as Robert mentioned, for the chrome Lucas horn/dip switch.

Are these what people refer to as straight bars?

Hi Robert, I have straights on my 1962 650SS and raised the bars by simply buying a new set of clamps, remove the old top clamp, turn the new clamp upside down, and place under the handle bar. The bar is now secured with 4 longer BSF bolts. Both brake and clutch cables probably have 5mm clearance with the top nut.

Hi Roger thats brilliant ,far too simple !!.   The SS and Atlas in the uk were mostly fitted with "straights"  but here  we are talking about the std 88 and 99 which unless specified came with the same low rise bars as the model 50 and ES2  and were designed for touring and commuting , which is why they often got changed to Ace bars  in the mid 1960's . Exactly what i did ,along with alloy guards, twin carbs, ballend levers and  chequered tape.

If it’s any help these are what handlebars I have on my ‘68 Atlas, not particularly sporty but certainly gives a comfortable riding position. Due to the age of the bike I’m thinking might be same as early Commando, cheers Simon
