Navigator charging system

Hi I am fairly certain my navi is not charging (no increase in voltage when engine reved , checked across battery with volt meter.) does anyone now how to simply check alternator with multi meter. my coils do not have original coulors on wires so it may have been replaced my wires are red black andblue I asumme non of the wire should short to earth but all three do. am desperate for some help with this Keith
