A mysterious hole in my 1951 ES2 crank case

Forums

There is a funky-looking slot-head grub-screw threaded into the lower timing-chest side of my crank case.

I am curious what the purpose was ? It must have been there for a reasonâ?perhaps relic of an oil way or breather outlet that had a purpose on an earlier model ?

It is illustrated in my 1950 Norton Spare Parts list: see the photos.

The illustration shows the screw should plug the holeâ?but why have the hole there in the first place?

Can anybody enlighten me please ?

Thanks again, Grant MacNeill, Toronto

As Michael says, almost certainly plugging a drilling. Yours looks as though someone has tried to remove it.....

From its position it is almost certainly a cross drilling for the oil return passage from the bottom of the crankcase.

Thanks for the input. No doubt a relic of the manufacturing process. Another minor Norton mystery.

Lets all forget I even mentioned it eh (grin)
