Forums

Can anyone advise me of the correct rear brake pedal on a 1952 Model 7 please, i have recently bought this bike which i think is fitted with a brake pedal off a swinging arm model ?.

Many thanks, Nick Carter

Here are two photos of an original genuine SA M7 pedal:

You can judge the length if you note the footrest arm and how far the end is past the chaincase fixing nut.

Also note there is a tendancy if you have much movement for it to clobber the exhaust pipe...This is correct believe it or not (but not intentional) This was highlighted in a road test in 1953. Norton cobbled up the swinging arm frame from the plunger frame in a hurry to keep up with the move to swinging arm frames but as the Featherbed frame was selling big time never worried themselves to change the pedal...I guess they had a few hundreds already made and wanted to use them up.

The last photo is of a plunger framed pedal....not sure if it different apart from being chromed?...This one appears to have been bent outwards to clear the exhaust pipe and problem as I mentioned above:

PS with closer inspection I can see the plunger version IS different...NOTE the sharper curving at the pivot position:

Thankyou Les, yes i think you are right about the chrome one in the third picture, where it is welded to the collar it is slightly higher to give more clearance from the exhaust, now my next question is would you know where i would be able to obtain one from or be able to put me in touch with anyone that may have one, i have only just joined the NOC and not very good with computers !.

I don't have one... so its just a matter of searching the usual places...NOC shop don't seem to have one....you might try to put a "Wanted" ad in the NOC Classifieds.

Try searching Ebay which is quite forward to do. (you managed to put your message on this Forum)

Perhaps even join the Norton Model 7 Yahoo group[ and ask there:
