Intermediate gear shaft

Hi. The intermediate gear shaft on my Dommie 99 is scrolled and has an oil hole drilled half way along the length of the shaft. Does the oil hole need to point upwards or down? I’ve over-thought this issue all day and can’t work it out, so hopefully, someone will have the real information.

The hole in the shaft should be pointing downwards. The arrangement relies on oil vapour passing along this shaft. Blown through from inside the crankcases when the pistons are descending. It then drips onto the intermediate gear (or half-time sprocket) which has a bush bearing. Check for wear in this bush and the shaft/spindle itself.  The gear should not be able to rock very much nor there be a shoulder worn on the shaft.

Hi Philip. Thanks very much for clarifying the orientation of the oil hole. The shaft is a bit of a loose fit in the crankcase - it doesn’t flop around in the bore but it’s very easy to slide it in and out. I’m worried that it might spin in the bore at some point (if it hasn’t already done that). Do you think it would be  possible to put a drop of medium strength thread locker (e.g . Loctite Blue) on the shaft to hold it more securely? Do you think that would work? I’ve got some ‘bearing fit’ Loctite Green stuff which is gap filling but I’m concerned that it might stick the shaft in the bore permanently and prevent future removal.

Any advice and wisdom gratefully accepted.

I think the intention is for the shaft to stay put.  A new shaft might solve the issue. Or getting the end plated . I don't take it out  at all. Locktite  will work  as it does not get  very hot.

Thanks Robert. I think I’ll try the blue Loctite first and see if it works. If not, I’ll buy a new shaft.

I just used Loctite 601. The new one is 603, but I had some 601. Well past its sell by date!  Mine did not go off very quickly, but was solid next day (today). Mine has been spinning for at least 10,000 miles and probably more. Now it isn't. If I'm keen enough, perhaps I'll remove the timing case again in a few months time. But life's too short to take the engine to pieces for a task like that. And I bet if I bushed it and reamed it there would be a much bigger chance of disaster. The hole goes all the way into the crank case, and I don't want swarf in there.

Although this shaft was designed to fit a particular way round I don't think It is going to matter too much if it located differently. Oil vapour from the cases is still going to be blown though the shaft onto the pinion bearing. For the mileage the bike is likely to be ridden, it will probably make no serious difference with regard to wear.
