Fork top nut thread

Forums

The top nut, filler plugs on the top of each leg. Have read conflicting info on TPI, are they 26 or 28 TPI? Mine are a bit butchered and need to clean them up, any suggestions? John

Possibly 26 or 20 TPI if they are cyclethreads. New ones in chrome are only about £9 each from Norvil. Other suppliers are available of course. If your threads are burred or damaged you simply need some judicial use of a needle file to recover them, so why are you after the TPI of the threads? If you can find a die it will almost certainly cost more than 2 new nuts.

Hi John,

Near certain there will be variations but mine were 1 1/8" 20tpi cycle (long roadholder 1955). When I looked for a die the only HSS one I could find cost £150. I'm glad I was sitting down at the time!

If you get really, really lucky you'll find one but they are extremely rare. The only alternative is even rarer; UNS (Unified National Special) which are 60 degree thread form, the same as cycle.

Have gone ahead and ordered two new nuts but unfortunately the old ones have been forced into the stanchions somewhat deforming the internal thread so I still need to clean these up hence needing to know the TPI. What ever it is I will be able to use a tap as a thread chaser. I haven't dismantled the forks yet but am lead to believe they are new stanchions so someone has been a bit brutal. Long Roadholders 52 ES2. John
