To flush or not to flush?

Forums

The previous owner of my "54 ES2 crammed the timing case with thick grease - presumably to queten a sloppy chan which I hve now adjusted. The Haycroft Book of the Norton notes that no lubrcation of the timing chain is necessary as it is lubricated by the engine oil.

I've cleared most of the grease out but am concrned that it may get carried (or already have been carried) through the system and block small oilways. Would it be prudent to drain the bike and refill with flushing oil, run it for a few minutes then drain and refill with normal engine oil to obviate this potential probelm?

Or am I being paranoid?

Cheers

Hi George, I wouldn't worry about that as the only oil that is present in the outer timing case gets there past the inlet cam bush and then escapes (to the road) via the small timing case breather pipe. There is no recirculation back into the engine.

Ahh! Hence the copper drain pipe! Doh!

Thanks Ian. By the way, did you ever go to Gunnersbury School?
