Electrickery

Forums

Ok this has me stumped but I admit I am no genius when it comes to electrickery. With my battery mounted in my 1938 ES2 and no dynamo in the system If I put my mulitmeter on the battery I get a reading of around 6.55V which is as expected. However when I start the bike it varies wildly and erratically between about 10 -18. I would expect it to read the same 6.55V. Remember there is no dynamo in the system it is unplugged and pulled back so is not even spinning.

Any thoughts ?

Do you have meter on the bike and the vibration is bouncing the needle about..? The battery only works the lights and without the dynamo there is no connection to the engine.

I wish I had a bike that produced electricity without a dynamo, it would be worth a fortune :)

I had another go today as after thinking about it and then reading Dave's post I thought I must be going mad. But sure enough was doing the same thing. Now this is a digital multimeter we are talking about and have used it many times before on my car and other bike. I sat it on a milk crate and the only thing touching bike was the end of two probes on battery. Was varying wildly between about 6.7V and 18V today. Weird !!
