Dynamo rotation

Forums

Hi all.

A question about dynamo direction of rotation, i have two dynamos one has a clockwise rotation arrowand the other has a anticlockwise rotation arrow viewed from driving gear.Does this mean they will only charge in the direction of there arrows? or will they charge in both directions?also how does the dynamo know what direction to rotate when applying voltage as I've changed polarity on one and i am sure it ran the same way.

best wishes John H.

Isn't it the case that the different rotations had different brush holders ? I believe they work in the 'wrong' direction but that there can be brush problems sooner or later.

Brush wear pattern will give a good idea of use. You may have to re-polarise the dynamo, a simple thing to do.

The direction of rotation can be changed if the field winding connections are swopped over. If the battery is positive earth, the 'F' terminal can be 'flashed' to the negative terminal of the battery to magnetise the field pole. That will give the field pole enough residual magnetism to start the charging current when the dynamo rotates. If the dynamo is removed and a shorting link between 'F and 'D' is connected, the the dynamo can be 'motored' by applying + to the body of the dynamo and - to the 'D/F' link. The dynamo can be tested in this way and it will then rotate ihe correct way.

Thank you gentlemen for your swift reply's i will be skipping down to the shed soon to apply this newly gained knowledge, i thought that i had wasted £150 by restoring the wrong dynamo phew!

I think Richard is referring to the situation where the leadng edge of the brush could "dig in" if rotation direction incorrect.
