Dave Taylor head steady

Forums

Hi Guys, I'm thinking of fitting a Dave Talylor head steady on my Mk3, are they better than standard ? also have they got comprehensive fitting instructions that even half an idiot can follow ! One with spring or no spring?any thoughts will be helpful, cheers Tony.

I'm very pleased with mine. No more vibration than standard and far more positive steering. They're quite OK to fit (but can be more problematical if you have metric-sized (Italian made) tubing).

It's essential to set them up with weight on as per the instructions. I found it a bit of a balancing act sitting on the bike, holding on to the bench with one hand and tightening with the other. It is possible though and would be even easier with a second pair of hands.

I can tell you about the standard Mk3 Head Steady, mine developed a big crack across it and had to be replaced. This wasaround 1990, so I bought a Norvil stainless head steady and to date no issues to report, except a slight increase in vibration. Fitting was straight forward. Anything has to be better than thestandard head steady.

I have the RGM one fitted and agree with Richards comments regarding improved handling.

Out of the box the clamp was a loose fit on my frame. I spent some time carefully rubbing the mating faces of the clamp on a fine wet and dry until it would hold.

The alternative is the CNW version which mounts to the original bolt location on the frame so is not affected by tube diameters.
