Cylinder cooling fins

Forums

Whilest riding home last weekend on my 1939 Es2 I heard a "ping". I later discovered there was a large piece of fin missing from the barrel. I have not got a spare nackered barrel to sacrifice for a repair piece, so what I want to know is, what else can I use for to fabricate a repair?

I thought of using a piece of cast iron bath, or maybe a bit of old farm impliment, or is there some stock of metal that I can obtain from the shelf somewhere?

What does everyone else use? This must be a common problem with old barrels and there is a serious lack of duff items to hack up for repair material. Any suggestions?

Boo. Finless and floundering.

I've got a small heap of autojumble 16H cylinders in the corner of the workshop. I'm sure that one of them could miss yet another fin. How big a piece do you need ?...and where are you ?

I had a few fins missing of the barrel on my inter when I got it. I took it to a local welders and asked what the best course of actions was and he said it would be easier without a donar fin. He just built up the existing fin with weld and then I had the file it back and clean it up. It wasn't as big a job as I expected either. He kept it very neat and I didn't have the remove much material at all! This was an ally barrel so I don't know if the same technique would work as well on cast iron. Might be worth looking into it though.

You'd never be able to tell now, it had blended in brilliantly, so it might be worth looking into that as a possibility.

Richard, I am based in sunny Cornwall, butI will hopefully be attending then Bristol Rally next month on the old girl, reliability pending. I'm off to France on her first. The necessary part is almost six inches long and five & three quarters long.

I have been told, it is possible to use flat steel and silver solder. Has anyone had sucess with this method? Building up with weld is too much as you can imagine.

I've repaired a few barrels. I get some cardboard and make a template out of it so it fits nicely where the fin would go. Then use some sheet steel the right thickness and make it the same shape as the template, then shape the thickness to match the existing fin. I have used rods for dissimilar metals and it has worked ok. Tack the fin at both ends and let it cool right off, then slowly tack where you can. It's not always easy but the trick seems to be not to get it too hot. I did have one crack on my 16H so flowed braze along the weld. It's on there and looks ok as long as I don't try levering the fin it will last, but you don't need to use cast iron for the repair.

Thank you all. I will be sourceing some mild steel and a good welder. don't trust my welding too much!

In the meantime I will be on the lookout for a fin or two as a best option.

Many Thanks,

Boo.
