Boyer experience and Wassell replacement

Forums

While I realise a Norton site but in addition to my model 99 I have a Triumph 1971 T120R and a number of us will own more than one classic bike. I thought therefore I would share a Boyer experience as many of us also have electronic ignition on our bikes. Recently experienced with T120 several times on steep hills dramatic loss of power (Caerphilly mountain being the most notable for those who know it) resulting in changing right down just to keep any pace at all on steepest bits and as the engine became more stressed overheating. Thought it was fuel and running lean so new jets and so on - no change. It would appear to have been the Boyer. It was 14 years old (owned bike since 2004) but until recently it started if a little reluctantly in terms of number of kicks and ran OK until under stress as mentioned but thought given starting Boyer OK. Recently Boyer failed (crossed the relevant wires as no evidence of spark when initially trying to kick start coils OK) so changed to Wassell, really as an experiment and change and what a difference. First time starter and no loss of power. I can only assume with Boyer ignition box was breaking down under load although wiring may have contributed but no obvious breaks or poor crimps. Now first time starter and no problems. I also find the Wasells a very neat bit of kit and easy to rubber mount under saddle and with a protected sender unit. As I say just my experience which may help another Norton member with similar issues although the T120's clutch has now started to slip so one more job to do. Cheers, Hugh

I had a Wassell voltage regulator on an A10 and had no problems with it. I know they have a poor reputation (and that goes back decades - I remember when they were based near the Birmingham City ground and run by an extremely grumpy man).

Hugh, what kind of ignition system do you have on your Norton? The Wassell ignition system fits the Commando style distributor and also points in timing cover models. They don't have a system that fits the Dominator distributor or magneto system. If you want to use a Wassell system on a Dominator, you will have to obtain a Commando distributor which replaces the mag (or old style distributor) perfectly.

Ah, my mistake must have been riding a Norton!

Note for Jonathan. Excuse the delay in response but been away. The Norton is ia Model 99 Dominator unmodified except for 12 volt up rating for horn and lights. Its fitted with a distributor and points. No problem starting and keeping it 'simple'. The Triumph above came with Boyer in 2004. I also have a 1957 350 Bullet with magnito and points and that is amazing in terms of starting. Gets left for months with old fuel yet starts readily. Hugh
