I recently put an add in wanted for a CJ frame ,about a couple of weeks later got an email from a man it America saying he had such a frame and a few bits if I was interested. I mailed him back saying yes could he send photographs , he did and low and behold he sent me photographs of my bike from the website I had bought the bike from in the first place . Firstly I hadn't realised that anyone can look at NOC classified ,and secondly surly it would be better if people had to be members so some sort of check that people are genuine , Names addresses held by the club. at least they would have paid into the club to increase membership numbers . Should it not be that non members can only have a limited acces to a very small amount of information as to entice them to join and increase members.
as for the bloke no paracite who tried to do this I strung him along for weeks asking about carrage ,other bits I pretended to want . Then when he was get suspicious I had a few beers one night I email him with a myriad of language that I didn't know I had in me . It made me feel better anyway!
So can anything be done !
regards Ian

sorry to learn of your experience - we're aware that allowing the classifieds to be viewed by non members does increase the risk in this respect, however it also increases the chances of a sale?
Whenever we have asked before if advertisers would prefer to restrict their adverts to only being seen by members, a majority have always suggested that on balance they prefer the system as it is?
what do others think?
Hi Peter,
I had the same issue when looking for a CS-1 frame. The repondent sent me the correct photo for what I was looking at. He knew I didn't live in the UK and gave me the banking details and his address. When I sent a friend living in the UK down to pay and pick up the frame the door was very quickly slammed shut. Not much we can do about it I expect.

I agree that the classifieds should only be visible to members. I am fairly new myself but take security seriously. How many times are e mail and phone numbers printed for instance?
I see the comment that most do not mind. What and who constitute most? A few discussions down the local clubhouse,or a proper poll of members?
No one ever asked me for my preferences.

How about a flag the poster clicks on when submitting an ad that indicates it can/can not be seen by non-members (logged in/not logged in). A non-member would see something like "You must be logged on to see the details of this ad" - let them see what is being advertised but no details. That might encourage some to join and scammers to scram.
Is this possible?

I'd point out that anyone…
I'd point out that anyone can join the club, just by paying the membership fee which, compared to the amount that a scammer might defraud you out of, is not a large amount. Restricting an advert to members only might not give you the extra security you might imagine it does.

?Just right!
Simply give us the chance to choose to allow non members to see the advert, or keep only visible to members of the club.
I also experienced some time ago a similar situation when I was contacted after having advertised for spares. The man offered me many parts for a cheap price, but when asked for photographs, he didn?t. I then insisted, but nothing. Finally he dissapears.
I assume it was a fake. People who use the membership of the club for that purposes.
Conclusion: More chances=More risk.
About the theme, How can I get a NOC member list? So can I now if the person is a member, and also if joined each member with his bike(s), to share information.
Cheers,
Hans in Chile.

I also had this scam from someone in the States offering a headlight.
I agree with Hans. More chances, more risk.

Like others I do not recol…
Like others I do not recollect seeing any survey of the members regarding having the ads available to all and sundry on the internet.
I guess that the first thing that needsto be established is whether the NOC sales section of the website is for the benefit of the members only whether buying and/or selling.
It is free to members to post adverts, and so are many bike magazines. Then there are others with massive circulation compared with the number of club members, plus the ebay and Gumtree options, all with a cost but for that fee you will at least access many thousands of potential buyers.
IMHO sales and wants, via the NOC website, should have access restricted to members only. If some scammer wants to pay his £21 membership, then at least he can be traced by his membership details, and the club will still have his money. Remember that you don't even have to own a Norton to join the Norton OWNERS Club. NOC adverts for NOC members only is my view. I will be interested to see other views

Hi just to say I get lots…
Hi just to say I get lots of pleasure out of the club and don't mind in any way paying my way, what can a member get out of the club that a non member cannot is it that the non member can't reply to the message board . Or is there more . I would prefer to sell or buy from members as I would like to think that most if not all are pretty decent people going off what I have asked questions about on the site
there must be something in regards security .does the club not send Roadholder out to addresses ,could the valid email address and postal address not have to match .I'm not expecting the club to show everyone's address but when someone tries to buy or sell there's at least some sort of paper trail . As for scammers If this site had to be paid for I think they wouldn't spend the cash they would rather scam some other site that costs nothing.
thanks for the replys Ian
