1925 Model 17C

Forums

Hello,

Can anyone please respond with a photo of the rear stand and spring mounting arrangement off a genuine 1925 Model 17C Colonial model.   My stand seems to be missing the lug to attach the spring to.   I have tried to enlarge the illustration in the original parts book I have but it's still not clear enough.

Thanks in advance.

As it's a bit quiet on this one Ian...
interested because in searching for a rear stand for a 500T which is slightly different than a 16H.  (Spring is mounted on the left side of machine)

With the 1925 17C the parts list stated the stand is the same for all models (18, 16H, Big 4).  (I assume that are all running 27" wheels).  What I have discovered is that replicas are solid cast leg, end plate and pivot, whilst originals are tubular legs with castings either end. Top casting carries the pivot eye, stop leg and spring mount, which is roughly 2" below the pivot.

So back to your question, I don't know, but it seems any 25 machine uses the same principles so you can widen your search.  You could also look at replicas on sale to see the spring mount  design and measurement.

Thanks for the follow-up Jon.  The Model 17C used the Big 4 frame for better ground clearance for us down here in the Colonies.
My research of photos and manuals show two types of stand were fitted. Some had the clip attached to the bottom lip of the rear mudguard. Most show the spring attached to the right hand pivot area as was continued on prewar and post war rigid frames.
As my stand doesn't have the spring attachment lug on the right hand side of the stand I guess I have two options.
Find a suitable mudguard clip or make a lug and weld it to the stand.
If I weld, I need to ensure correct spacing to tension the stand properly.
Cheers, Ian

I will measure the actual distance on a 1930s inter I have access to.  I'd be more inclined to drill and tap the casting and Loctite it in place. Replicas seem to use a hex bar threaded one end grooved the other, sometimes a weld over the threaded end to keep in place.
I understand the "C" ground clearance but if the wheels are the same the lift of the stand should not be affected.  Am I missing something here?

With regard to the clip I think it varied on models some had a sprung steel clip others had a  wing nut positive clamping, but I think they all had a spring.
will get back to you with the  measurement.

2 5/8" centre of pivot to centre of spring pin, that's the measurement off a 28 model 18.

VintageNorton have a few pictures of a 17C but not specifically a 25 version.  Not sure all had springs but the pictures I have seen have them fitted.

The 25 spares book in our library does not suggest there were different versions of the stand.

if you have a spring that's the best way to start, readily available on line for pre war Nortons.

You may be able to contact David Pattison via the Norton Singles Facebook forum.
He has a 17C.
My big four has a non original stand so likely not helpful. Good luck.

Thanks for the follow-up. I have the original stand on the frame but no spring attachment point.
I have been able to enlarge the illustration in the 1925 parts book I have using high resolution photocopier at the local library. It gives me a good image of the location and now have to carry out the job.
