Commando Gearbox Number

Forums

Hi there - only just noticed that my 74 Mk 2 Commando has no gearbox number stamped on it. I had a look at another Commando and see the number clearly on the upper casing - did they stop stamping at some point or is this likely to be a replacement shell?

One other point, I read in a recent magazine article in CBG that the gearbox number should match the engine number? - didn't think that was the case.

The gearbox number matches the engine and frame numbers on my 74 and 72, so you probably have a replacement shell.

I recently bought a new Mk 3 shell from Andover Norton and it is unstamped as you would expect.

On the subject of gearbox numbers, does anyone know what the letter after the number on commando gearboxes indicates?

Terry.

Thanks for the info - checked the top lug but no numbers there either, must be a replacement casing. Steve
